현직 국회의원의 SNS(Facebook) 활용이 재당선에 미치는 영향: 제21대 국회의원 선거를 중심으로

국문 초록

정치과정에서 SNS의 활용이 계속 증가하는 가운데, 과연 SNS를 활용한 정치 활동이 효용성을 갖는 것인가라는 문제의식을 직접적으로 다룬 연구는 많지 않다. 본 연구는 이러한 기존 연구의 한계를 보완하기 위해 ‘현직 국회의원의 SNS 활용이 그들의 재당선에 영향을 미치는가’라는 연구질문에 대한 답을 찾는 데에 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 현직 국회의원의 SNS(페이스북) 활용으로 대표되는 정치과정에서의 SNS 활용이 현직 의원의 재당선에 미치는 영향력의 정도를 파악할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 보다 구체적으로 본 연구는 국회의원선거에서의 현직 효과에 기여하는 후보자 요인의 하나로서 ‘SNS 활용’이 의미 있는 독립변수인지 판단할 수 있는 이론적, 경험적 증거를 제시하는 데 주력한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 파이썬(Python)을 활용한 크롤링 작업을 통해 페이스북 데이터를 수집하여 SNS 활용의 효과를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 페이스북 활동은 페이스북이 제공하는 구체적인 서비스의 종류별로 서로 다른 결과를 보여주고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 현직 국회의원의 페이스북 활동량(친구 수 / 게시물 수)은 당선에 유의미한 영향을 주지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 현직 국회의원의 페이스북 활동에 대한 이용자의 반응을 나타내는 ‘좋아요 수’, ‘댓글 수’, ‘공유 횟수’ 는 의원의 재당선에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, ‘좋아요 수’는 의원의 재당선에 강한 긍정적 영향을 나타내고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 하지만, 분석모형에 포함된 페이스북의 기능적 활용 변수 중, ‘댓글 수’와 ‘공유 횟수’는 오히려 당선에 부정적인 영향을 끼치고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 이러한 차이는 SNS 활동이 가지고 있는 다양한 특성의 차이에서 기인하는 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

As the use of social media (SNS) in political processes continues to increase, few studies directly address the question of whether political activities utilizing SNS are truly effective. This study aims to address this gap by exploring the question, “Does the use of SNS by Incumbent members of the National Assembly affect their reelection?” Through this research, it is expected to understand the extent to which the use of SNS (Facebook) by sitting lawmakers impacts their reelection, representing the use of SNS in the political process. More specifically, this study focuses on providing theoretical and empirical evidence to determine whether 'SNS usage' is a significant independent variable contributing to the incumbent effect in congressional elections. To this end, the study conducted an analysis of the effects of SNS usage by collecting Facebook data through Python-based crawling. The analysis revealed that Facebook activities show different results depending on the specific services provided by Facebook. The amount of activity on Facebook by sitting members of the National Assembly (number of friends/posts) was not found to significantly influence election outcomes. However, user responses to Facebook activities, such as 'likes', 'number of comments on posts', and 'share counts', were found to have a significant impact on the reelection of lawmakers. In particular, the 'number of likes' was shown to have a strong positive influence on reelection. However, among the functional Facebook usage variables included in the analysis model, 'number of comments' and 'share counts' were found to have a negative impact on election outcomes. These differences are believed to stem from the varied characteristics of SNS activities.
