19세기 영국의 『삼국지연의』 번역: 조지 가디너 알렉산더를 중심으로

국문 초록

본고는 19세기 영국번역가 조지 가디너 알렉산더(George Gardiner Alexander, 1821- 1897)가 중국 역사연의소설 『삼국지연의』를 서구의 역사 로맨스 장르와의 유사성 속에서 수용함으로써 창조적으로 변용한 양상에 대해 고찰한다. 알렉산더는 1862년과 1863년에 동탁(董卓)고사와 왕윤(王允)고사 2편을 잇따라 번역해서 런던의 문학잡지 『매주(Once a Week)』에 발표했다. 그는 연환계(連環計) 고사를 번역하면서 『삼국지연의』를 역사적 사건과 인물의 바탕 위에 로맨틱하고 상상적인 요소가 가미된 역사 로맨스로 이해했다. 영국해병대 소장으로 퇴역한 알렉산더는 중국에서 근무할 때 쌓은 중국어 실력으로 번역뿐 아니라 중국관련 저서도 집필할 정도로 학식을 갖춘 재야의 중국학자였다. 중국문학 번역가로서 그는 번역가의 자유로운 개입이 허용되는 번역방식으로 『삼국지연의』를 번역했다. ｢사도의 책략｣과 ｢왕완의 운명｣에 나타난 가장 두드러진 번역특징은 등장인물의 변화, 의역, 생략과 축약, 첨가, 협비(夾批)의 번역 등이다. 초선과 여포의 이미지를 변화시켰으며, 의역을 사용해서 독자의 이해도를 높였고, 서술의 집중과 사건의 빠른 전개를 위해 생략 및 축약을 가했으며, 새로운 내용을 첨가하여 희극성(喜劇性)을 더했다. 원문의 협비를 선별적으로 번역함으로써 특정 사안을 강조하고, 도덕적 훈계를 일깨우고, 등장인물에 대한 중국평점가의 품평을 전했다. 그의 번역은 2편 모두 제목에서는 사도 왕윤을 주인공으로 내세우고 있으나 실제 번역문에서는 왕윤보다 여포와 초선을 남녀주인공으로 부각시키면서 그들의 사랑에 서술의 초점을 맞추었다. 이로써 왕실의 대의를 도모하는 충신 왕윤의 활약상과 주인에 대한 은혜에 보답하는 가기 초선의 이미지는 약화했고, 반면 약혼녀를 빼앗은 연적에 대한 증오에 불탄 여포의 통쾌한 복수가 부각되었다.

영문 초록

This article examines how the British translator George Gardiner Alexander (1821-1897) creatively transformed the Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by embracing its similarities to the Western historical romance genre in nineteenth-century. In 1862 and 1863, G. G. Alexander published two translations of episodes involving Dong-Zhuo and Wang-Yun in London literary magazine Once a Week, which he described it as historical romances. When translating the tales, he interpreted Romance of the Three Kingdoms as a historical romance with romantic and imaginative elements rooted in historical events and characters. Alexander, a retired Major General in the Royal Marines, was a knowledgeable Chinese scholar who utilized his proficiency in the Chinese language acquired during his time in China not only for translation but also for writing about China. As a translator of Chinese literature, he approached the translation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms with a method that allowed for considerable intervention in the original text. The most notable features of his translations in “A Chapter of Chinese History: The Minister’s Stratagem” and “Romance of Chinese History: The Fate of Wong-Wan” include alterations in characters, paraphrasing, omissions and condensations, additions, and the translation of insertion comments. He changed the image of Diao-Chan and Lü-Bu, employed paraphrasing method to enhance reader understanding, utilized omissions and abbreviations to maintain narrative focus and propel the story forward swiftly. We added romantic comicality using the addition method. Selective translations of the insertion comments in the original text were employed to highlight specific issues, reiterate moral admonitions, and introduce evaluations of the characters. Although both translations' titles feature Minister Wang-Yun as the protagonist, the translation actually emphasizes Lü-Bu and Diao-Chan as the male and female protagonist, focuses the narrative on their love, rather than Wang-Yun. This weakened the image of Wang-Yun as a loyal subject who sacrificed himself for the royal, and the image of Diao-Chan as a singing girl who repaid her master's favor. Instead, it emphasizes Lü-Bu's revenge on his romantic rival for stealing his fiancée.
