공화국의 통치성과 소록도의 가족 로망스

국문 초록

박정희 체제는 주체의 개조와 성실한 노동, 중산층 가족의 건설이라는 통치성을 기반으로, ‘조국 근대화’에 대한 국민들의 열망을 조직한다. 이는 독재와 저항의 구도로만 설명될 수 없고, 자발적 동원과 저항, 정상성을 둘러싼 주체의 수행을 둘러싸고 비균질적 지점을 노출한다. 이를 잘 보여주는 것이 이청준의 소설 『당신들의 천국』이다. 『당신들의 천국』은 한센인 수용시설이 있는 소록도를 배경으로, 간척사업과 단종시술, 미감아와 건강인, 환자 등의 문제를 전면화한다. 초남성적 사회로 일컬어지는 박정희 체제하에서 소록도는 노동할 수 있는 국민으로 거듭날 것을 요구받는다. 소록도의 간척사업에 동원된 환자들은 강제와 자발을 오가며 노동한다. 조백헌은 식민지기 원장들과 비교되는 ‘좋은 아버지’로서 기대를 품게 한다. 그의 근대화 담론은 주민들을 노동하는 주체로 호명하였으나, 이 노동은 동원의 다른 이름이었다. 그가 제시한 마지막 해결책인 ‘음성 병리자’와 ‘미감아’의 결혼은 가족 로망스를 통해 공동체의 미래를 담보하려 한다. 『당신들의 천국』은 한센인의 정상화가 가족 만들기를 통해 시도되는 지점을 보여준다. 그러나 이 결혼을 적극적으로 추진하는 것은 남성 지도자이고, 남성 청년들은 결혼 앞에서 망설이고 주저하는 모습을 보인다. 소설 역시 이 가족 로망스를 냉소적으로 지켜본다. 『당신들의 천국』은 지배와 자발적 동원을 둘러싼 비균질성을 드러내며 통치성을 벗어날 ‘배반’의 자유를 주장한다. 박정희 체제는 한센인을 격리 수용하고, 자발적인 주체로 거듭날 것을 요구한다. 소록도의 주민들은 통치성에 대항하기도 하고, 순응하기도 하면서 길항하는 모습을 보인다. 그런 점에서 『당신들의 천국』이 조백헌의 가족 로망스를 해체하면서 끝나는 것은 공화국의 통치성을 해체하는 대항담론으로 기능할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The Park Chung-hee regime organized the people's aspiration for ‘modernization of the nation’ based on the governmentality of the subject's renovation, sincere labor, and the construction of a middle-class family. This cannot be explained only by the structure of dictatorship and resistance, but it exposes an uneven point surrounding the act of the subject on voluntary mobilization, resistance, and normality. A good example of Park’s republic is Lee Chung-joon's novel, Your Paradise. Your Paradise is set in Sorokdo, where accommodation facility of the Hansen Disease's patients was located, and considers the governmentality of reclamation project, sterilization, cured and healthy people, and patients. Sorokdo is required to be reborn as a people who can work under the Park Chung-hee regime, which is said to be a hyper-masculine society. Patients mobilized for the reclamation project in Sorokdo between coercion and voluntary action. Cho Baek-heon raises expectations as a ‘good father’ compared to the heads of the colonial period. His modernization discourse called the residents as the subject of labor, but this labor was a different name for mobilization. His final solution, the marriage of a cured patient and a healthy child of Hansen patients tries to secure the future of the community through family romance. Your Paradise shows the point where the normalization of the Hansen Disease is attempted through building a family. However, it is the male leader who actively promotes this marriage, and a young male resident seem to hesitate about marriage. The novel also watches this family romance cynically. Your Paradise also asserts the freedom to escape govermentality through the heterogeneity surrounding domination and voluntary mobilization. The Park Chung-hee regime requires the Hansen to be isolated and reborn as a voluntary subject. The residents of Sorokdo both oppose and conform to governance. In this regard, the end of Your Paradise with the dissolution of Cho Baek-heon's family romance can serve as a counter-discourse that dismantles the foundation of the republic.
