영호(嶺湖) 통섭의 기미(幾微)와 그 좌절

국문 초록

이 글은 분열과 대립의 구도 속에서 유통했던 통섭의 가능성을 연안이씨 이후백가의 사례를 통해 분석, 진단한 것이다. 이후백가는 영남에서 발원한 호남의 명가였고, 정치･학문적으로는 서인 기호학파에 속해 있었다. 인조반정 이후의 서남당쟁은 대화와 타협의 여지를 축소시켰고, 숙종조 환국정치를 통한 정치적 보복의 상습화는 양자를 철저히 진영논리 속에 가두고 만다. 이런 경직된 환경에서도 이후백가는 입후 상황이 발생하면 남인 영남학파를 표방했던 영남의 본종으로부터 입양하는 전통을 지속했고, 율곡학(栗谷學)이 ‘학문 권력’으로서 강력한 영향력을 행사하고 있었음에도 이후백의 증손 이수인(李 壽仁)･영인(榮仁)은 퇴계학(退溪學)의 학습에 열정을 보이며 호남지역 ‘퇴계학 공부모임’의 중심축으로 기능했다. 이것은 사회･학문적 영역에서의 영호통섭(嶺湖統攝)의 기미에 분명했고, 조선시대 사회･사상사 연구의 주목할만한 장면으로 포착되기에 부족함이 없었다. 물론 경종연간의 신임사화로 인해 통섭의 가능성은 차단되었지만 이후백가의 사례는 조선시대를 다양한 각도에서 조망할 수 있는 단서를 제공하고 있다는 점에서 특별한 의미를 갖는다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes and diagnoses the possibility of consilience which was distributed in a structure of division and confrontation, through the case of Yi Hu-baek family in Yeonan Yi clan. Yi Hu-baek family was a reputable family in Honam which rose in Yeongnam. The family beloged to the Westerners and academically, the Giho(Gyeonggi and Chungcheong province) School. After the King Injo enthronement, the factional strife of Westerners and Southerners reduced the possibility for dialogue and compromise. The habitualization of political retaliation through the factional struggle during the reign of King Sukjong trapped both Westerners and Southerners in ideological camp logic. Even in this rigid environment, Yi Hu-baek family continued the tradition of adopting from the native species of Yeongnam, which advocated the Yeongnam school. Despit Yulgokhak(栗谷學) was exerting strong influence as academic power, Yi Su-in(李壽仁) and Yeong-in(榮仁), great-grandchildren of Yi Hu-baek, showed passion for learning Toegyehak(退溪學) and functioned as the central axis of Toegyehak Study Group in the Honam region. This was clear to the indication of consilience between Yeongnam and Honam region in the social and academic fields, and there was no insufficiency to be captured as a remarkable scene in the study of social and ideological history of the Joseon Dynasty. Of course, the possibility of consilience was blocked due to the Sin-Im Sahwa(辛壬士禍, Purge of 1721~1722) during the reign of King Gyeongjong, but the case of Yi Hu-baek family has special significance in that it provides clues to view the Joseon Dynasty from various angles.
