국문 초록

본 연구는 미국대학에서 공부하고 있는 한국 대학원 학생들의 학습 경험을 조사하였다. 연구방법으로는 인터뷰가 사용되었으며 12명의 한국 대학원 학생들이 참여하였다. 연구 결과를 살펴보면 한국 학생들의 학습 경험은 전공과 미국 대학에서의 학습기간과 상관없이 유사한 양상을 보이고 있었다. 학생들은 대체로 미국 대학의 교육의 질에 대해서 만족하고 있었는데, 학생 중심의 다양한 서비스, 교수자와 학생간의 수평적 관계, 자기 주도 학습으로 인한 학습력 향상 등을 주요 만족 요인으로 꼽았다. 선행 연구와 달리 한국 학생들은 문화적 충격으로 인한 문화 적응보다 교실 수업 문화의 차이로 인한 학습 적응에 더 많은 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 학생들은 미국 수업의 가장 큰 특징으로 토론과 질문 중심의 수업 방식을 꼽았으며, 학습에 도움이 되고 중요한 교수·학습 방법으로 인식하고 있었다. 하지만 자신들에게 익숙하지 않은 수업 방식이기 때문에 질문과 토론에 참여하는 것이 어렵다고 응답하였다. 또한 언어적 어려움으로 듣기와 말하기가 가장 어렵다고 응답하여 말하기와 쓰기가 가장 큰 언어적 장애 요인이라는 선행연구 결과와는 차이를 보였다. 학생들은 자신 들의 언어 능력에 대한 부정적 평가를 가장 신경 쓰고 있었으며 이는 언어 사용의 자신감에 부정적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 한국 학생들의 글로벌 경쟁력 강화를 위해 전통적 수업방식에 대한 개선과 영어 사용에 대한 환경적· 정서적 지원이 필요함을 시사하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to explore in-depth the experiences of Korean graduate students regarding academic experiences in the United States. Interviews were carried out with twelves students to gain insights into their difficulties and learning experiences. The participants shared more similar perceptions than differences regarding language difficulties, American culture, and academic adjustment issues. Based on the interviews, the participants were satisfied with the quality of education, favorable learning environments, quality services, and effective learning support systems. The main difficulties highlighted by participants were unfamiliar patterns of classroom interactions and language difficulties as intercultural communication barriers. Even though the participants were reluctant to participate in class discussion, they considered class discussion as a means to understand course materials. The results confirm the importance of cultural issues in the adjustment process, particularly in relation to classroom interactions. Listening and speaking were the most difficulties cited by the participants. The Korean students’ voices have challenged some of our taken-for-granted educational traditions, norms, and practices in the classroom. The study suggests that in the age of globalization, it is important to review and adapt our pedagogical practices and to realign them to equip Korean students for global competency.
