국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 조선의 권력이양과 승계가 이루어지는 정치과정을 고찰 하는 것이다. 구체적 사례로 세자 양녕대군을 폐위하고 충녕대군에게 전위한 사건을 살펴보고자 한다. 이 사건을 택한 이유는 첫째, 조선왕조의 후계자 선정에 따르는 제도와 절차, 이념을 잘 보여주기 때문이다. 둘째, 건국기에서 수성기로 넘어가는 시대의 정치적 특징을 풍부하게 보여준다. 태종은 ‘적장자 승계원칙’을 명분으로 제1차 왕자의 난을 일으켰다. 이 때문에 태종은 왕위계승 문제를 중시하여, 태종 4년 세자를 책봉하고 후계자 교육에 심혈을 기울였다. 그러나 양녕대군은 태종의 기대와 달리 학문에 태만하고 성적으로 방종했다. 그 반면 충녕대군은 높은 평가를 받았다. 이에 태종은 양녕대군을 폐위하고, 충녕대군을 세자로 책봉했다. 하지만 폐위 과정을 잘 살펴보면, 양녕대군이 의도적으로 왕위를 양보했음을 알 수 있다. 태종 또한 ‘적장자 승계원칙’을 파괴 하는 명분상의 곤란에도 불구하고, 충녕대군이 수성기에 가장 적합한 자질을 갖추고 있다고 생각하여 양녕대군을 폐위시킬 명분을 의도적으로 만들어 간 것으로 생각된다. 즉, 세자의 폐위 과정은 태종과 양녕대군 사이의 암묵적 동의하에 이루어진 일종의 연극적 성격을 띠고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper intends to inquire the political process of the power transfer and succession in Chos?n Dynasty. Specifically, it examine the dethronement of Crown Prince YN and the throne transfer to the Prince CN. Why does it choose this case? First, this case shows well the procedures, institutions, and ideology of the successor selection in Chos?n Dynasty. Secondly, it shows widely the political characteristics of consolidation period of Chos?n Dynasty. King Taejong rose in the first revolt of princes in the name of the principle of primogeniture succession. For this reason, he gave considerable thought to the throne succession problem. He proclaimed heir to the throne four years later after his accession and poured heart to the education of the heir. But YN fell short of his father’s expectations. He not only to neglect of study but also had fun with Gisaeng, the Korean geisha. On the other hand, Prince CN received a high evaluation from King Taejong, subjects and people. At last King Taejong dethroned YN and transfer the position to Prince CN in the name of the subjects’s petition. But, if were view the procedure more carefully, we can find out that Prince YN abdicated the throne to his excellent brother. King Taejong also seemed to have thought Prince CN to hold qualification for King. So, he tried to made the just causes to dethrone YN. In other words, the dethronement seemed to be a kind of play under the tacit agreement by two persons.
