고려 강도 성곽과 본궐에 대한 최근 논의의 검토

국문 초록

이 글은 강도의 성곽체계와 본궐 위치에 관한 최근 연구에 대해 검토하고자 작성한 것이다. 이는고려도읍 강도의 역사적ㆍ도시적 특징을 파악하기 위한 노력의 하나로 향후 강도 연구의 방향을 가늠해 보자는 차원에서다. 성곽체계에 대해 최근 2가지 견해가 제시되었다. 첫째, 강도 외성은 강화 동쪽 휴암~화도돈대 구간에 쌓은 해안 성이며, 중성은 현재 남아있는 ‘중성’, 내성은 조선시대 옛 강화부성과 계기적 관계에있으며 궁성과 황성이 통합된 성격이라는 것이다. 둘째, 천도 직후부터 축조한 외성을 연결하여1250년 성곽을 완성하면서 중성이라 불렀고(‘외성=중성’), 내성은 궁성으로 강도 성곽은 외성과 내성의 2성 체계였다는 것이다. 다시 상정된 대규모 ‘해안외성’의 존재는 오랫동안 통설로 자리 잡은‘해안외성’설이 가지는 한계를 극복하지 못했다. 또, ‘외성=중성’ 문제도 별도로 축성기록이 있는성곽 이름이 후대에 변용된 사례를 찾기 어려우며, ‘내성=궁성’도 고려시대 궁성을 지칭하는 용어로내성이 사용된 적이 없다가 강도에서만 예외적으로 적용된 것으로 보는 것은 합리적이지 않다는 점에서 검토가 필요하다. 강도 본궐의 위치와 범위에 대해서는 고고학적 자료와 자연ㆍ지리적 검토 등 다양한 방식의 접근이 이루어지면서 강도 본궐은 ‘고려궁지’가 아니라 궁골 일대에 자리하였다는 것에 대체적인 합의가이루어지고 있다. 그러나 최근 GIS와 고지형분석을 통해 강도 본궐의 범위는 궁골과 함께 ‘고려궁지’ 일대까지 광역으로 존재했을 것이라는 견해가 발표되었다. 비슷한 맥락에서 ‘고려궁지’는 포함되지않지만, 궁지 남쪽 능선 일대까지를 본궐의 범위로 설정하고 이를 토대로 강도 궁궐 추정 배치도가제시되었다. 이상의 연구 성과는 모두 관청리 일대를 에워싼 강도 내성(조선시대 옛 강화부성)의 존재를 전제로 한다. 궁골+‘고려궁지’ 일대에 분포하는 강도 본궐의 규모는 개경 궁궐과 유사하게 되는데 이를 확정하기 위해서는 첫째, ‘고려궁지’와 남쪽 구릉 지대는 강도 궁궐과 관련된 고고학적 공백지대라는 점, 둘째, 개경에 비해 협소한 강도의 공간에 개경과 비슷한 규모의 본궐을 건설할 수 있는지? 셋째, 100여 년에 걸쳐 조성된 개경 만월대의 구조와 규모를 단기간에, 강도에 구현할 수 있는지? (환도 이후에도 본궐은 예전의 모습을 되찾지 못하였다.) 넷째, 광역의 본궐이 존재했다는 시각의 출발점인 내성의 성격, 규모와 범위가 불확실한 점 등 고려해야 할 문제가 많다.

영문 초록

This article was written to review recent study on the castle system and the location of the palace of Gangdo. This is also effort to understand the historical and urban characteristics of Gangdo the only city in Goryeo Dynasty to officially replace the Gaegyeon and to assess the direction of future research of this city. In a recent study on the castle system of Gangdo, the existence of ‘Coastal Outer Castle’ was re-introduced. While understanding the Outer and Middle Castle as the same castle, it was also suggested that the castle system of Gangdo was identified as two-castle system. However, the opinion that support the existence of a large-scale 'Coastal Outer Castle' did not overcome the limit of the conventional theory for castle system of Gangdo, and the view that it was composed of two-castle is limited in that it is difficult to explain related literature records. There is a general agreement on the location and scope of the palace of Gangdo that the main palace of Gangdo was located in the ‘Goong-goal’, not the 'Goryeogung Palace Site’. However, through recent GIS and paleotopography analysis, it has been announced that the scope of the main palace of Gangdo existed in a wide area. According to this view, the main palace of Gangdo has a structure and scale similar to that of the Gaegyeong Palace. To confirm this, first, there is no archaeological site in this area so far, and second, is it possible to build a main palace with a scale similar to that of the Gaegyeong in a space with narrower intensity than the Gaegyeong? Third, was it possible to implement the structure and scale of the palace of Gaegyeong palace established over 100 years in Gangdo in a short period of time? (Even after the palace of Gaegyeong has not regained its former shape.) Fourth, there are many problems to consider, such as the uncertain characteristic, scale, and scope of of Inner Castle of Gangdo, which is the starting point of the view that the main palace in the large-scale area existed.
