구석기시대 사용된 자갈돌의 시론적 연구

국문 초록

구석기시대 사람들은 돌을 비롯해 뼈, 뿔, 나무 등 다양한 재료를 이용해 도구를 제작하고 사용하였다. 그 가운데 돌로 된 도구인 석기가 구석기시대 유적에서 대부분 출토되기 때문에 다양한 석기들을바탕으로 도구의 기능과 유적의 성격, 당시 생활과 문화 등을 이해하고자 하는 연구가 주를 이루었다. 구석기시대 유적에서는 석기 제작과 관련해 떼진 흔적이 있는 몸돌, 격지, 그리고 손질이 베풀어진도구뿐만 아니라 떼진 흔적은 없지만 사용으로 인해 형성된 흔적이 있는 자갈돌이 함께 종종 확인된다. 손질 없이 사용된 자갈돌은 구석기시대부터 지속해 사용된 도구이지만 다른 석기에 비해 활발한연구가 이루어지는 주제는 아니었다. 따라서 사용된 자갈돌에 관심을 가지고, 그 기능과 역할에 대해실험과 민족지학 자료, 쓴자국분석을 토대로 시론적인 검토를 시도하고자 하였다. 구석기시대 유적에서는 다양한 사용된 자갈돌이 확인되지만, 크게 망치, 모루, 홈돌, 갈린돌로구분할 수 있다. 일반적으로 망치는 석기 제작에 사용되었다고 보지만 실제 다양한 용도로 사용되면서 형성된 흔적이 확인된다. 모루 또한 큰 돌감을 깨는 망치로써 단독으로 사용되기도 하며, 양극떼기와 같이 석기를 제작하는 과정 혹은 뼈나 단단한 열매를 깨는 작업에서 다른 도구와 함께 사용되기도 한다. 홈돌은 둥글고 납작한 형태의 돌을 이용하는데, 넓게 보면 망치와 모루의 기능을 가진다. 홈의 크기, 깊이 흔적 등에 따라 석기 제작, 단단한 열매 가공 등 여러 기능으로 사용되었던 것으로볼 수 있다. 갈린돌의 경우 표면에 전체적으로 갈린 흔적 혹은 줄자국이 확인되는데, 가죽 작업이나뼈, 뿔을 다듬는 작업 등에 사용되었을 것으로 보인다. 이렇듯 사용된 자갈돌은 선사시대 사람들이다양한 방식으로 사용한 도구라고 볼 수 있다. 손질 없이 사용된 자갈돌은 구석기시대부터 오랫동안 사람들이 사용해 온 도구로 당시 사람들의기술 행위와 활동 방식이 잘 반영되어 있다. 따라서 우리나라의 구석기시대 유적에서도 망치와 모루를비롯해 다양한 종류의 사용된 자갈돌이 확인되고 있다. 앞으로 사용된 자갈돌에 대한 다양한 연구가축적된다면 구석기시대 사람들의 기술-경제 활동과 관련된 더 풍부한 해석이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

Paleolithic people made and used tools from a variety of materials, including stone, bone, antler, and wood. In particular, based on stone tools found in Paleolithic sites, many researchers have made an effort to reveal the function of the site and the life and culture of the people. It has found not only cores, flakes, retouched tools, but also pebbles that were not retouched but had traces by use in Paleolithic sites. Although utilized pebbles have been continuously used in the Paleolithic, they have not been treated much as a subject of research. So we will try to understand various functions of utilized pebbles through use-wear analysis, experiments, and ethnographic research. There are many different types of utilized pebbles in Paleolithic sites, but they can be largely categorized as hammer stones, anvil stones, pitted stones, and ground stones. Hammer stones can be used alone or in combination with other tools. It is generally assumed that they were used to make stone tools, but they were used for a variety of purposes. Anvil stones were used alone as hammer stones for knapping big stones, or such as bipolar debitage in combination with hammer stones, or to crack bones or hard fruits. Pitted stones have the function of both a hammer and an anvil. Depending on the size and depth of the pits formed on the pebble, it can be assumed that it was used for various functions, such as making stone tools and breaking hard fruits, nuts. Ground stones have grinding or stripe traces on the surface, and it is likely that they were used to work with leather, bone, and antler. Utilized Pebbles had been used as tools by people for a long time since the Paleolithic and reflected the technology, activities, and culture of the people at that time. Various types of utilized pebbles, including hammer and anvil stones, have been identified in Paleolithic sites on the Korean Peninsula. If studies on the utilized pebbles are accumulated, it is expected that we have dynamic interpretations related to the technological and economic activities of Paleolithic people.
