유아교사들이 인식한 ‘위험한 칭찬’과 ‘바람직한 칭찬’

국문 초록

본 연구는 유아교사들이 인식한 ‘위험한 칭찬’과 ‘바람직한 칭찬’이 무엇인지를 심 층면담을 통해 규명하고자 하였다. 연구대상은 수도권에 위치하고 있는 유치원교사 와 어린이집 교사 10명으로 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아교사들이 인식한 ‘위 험한 칭찬’은 ‘비교를 통해 경쟁을 유발하는 칭찬’, ‘교사의 의도대로 하기 위한 칭 찬’, ‘내적 동기를 외적 동기로 바꾸는 칭찬’, ‘남발되는 빈번한 칭찬’, ‘진정성 없는 칭 찬’, ‘결과 위주의 칭찬’인 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 유아교사들이 인식한 ‘바람직한 칭 찬’은 ‘기준이 분명한 일관성 있는 칭찬’, ‘구체적 칭찬’, ‘시기적절한 즉각적 칭찬’, ‘노력에 대한 칭찬’, ‘진심을 담은 칭찬’인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 칭찬이라 고 무조건 좋은 것이 아니라 아니한 만 못한 ‘위험한 칭찬’도 있기에 ‘바람직한 칭찬’ 이 무엇인지를 알고 이를 유아교육현장에서 활용해야 함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

This study intended to find out what are dangerous and desirable compliments through in-depth interviews. The interviewees were 10 teachers in kindergartens and day care centers in the capital area and the result is as follows. First, dangerous compliments perceived by teachers of young children are compliments that compare students and encourage competition; compliments to turn the situation as the teacher’s intention; compliments that change inner motives into outer motives; overly-used compliments; insincere compliments; and compliments on results. Second, desirable compliments in the perception of teachers are consistent compliments based on a clear standard; specific compliments; timely and immediate compliments; compliments on efforts; and sincere compliments. This research indicates that compliments are not always beneficial and can sometimes be harmful and that teachers should be aware of what are proper compliments and use them in the education field.
