중도입국 청소년의 학교 적응 요인 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 중도입국 청소년의 초기 적응 교육 기관인 다문화 예비학교에서의 적응 과정에 관한 사례 연구를 통해 중도입국 청소년의 학교 적응에 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하는데 있다. 이러한 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해서 다문화 예비학교 학생 15명, 예비학교 교사, 학부모를 연구 참여자로 선정하였다. 자료 수집은 관찰, 심층 면담, 문서 분석 등의 방법으로 이루어졌으며, 수집된 자료를 개별 사례 내 분석, 사례 간 분석을 하여 학교 적응 요인을 추출하였다. 연구 결과는 다문화 예비학교에서는 한국어 교육뿐만 아니라 정규 학교로 복귀하기 전에 충격을 완충하는 곳으로 학교생활 및 학습에 적응할 수 있도록 교육함에도 불구하고, 중도입국 청소년들은 한국어로 인한 의사소통의 어려움 뿐 만 아니라 본국과 한국의 문화적 차이로 인한 생활적응과 학습 적응에서도 어려움을 겪는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 교육과정의 차이나 학교 규칙의 차이로 인한 어려움도 느끼고 있었다. 부모, 교사, 친구와의 관계 형성도 학생의 일상생활 및 학업에 다양한 형태로 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이를 근거로 중도입국 청소년들이 학교 적응하는 데에 필요한 중요 요인은 의사소통, 생활적응과 학습적응, 관계형성 요인임이 밝혀졌다. 앞으로 더욱 증가하게 될 중도 입국 청소년을 위한 초기적응을 위해서는 체계적이고 실질적인 맞춤형 교육이 활성화되어야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore elements of immigrant youths adjustment to multicultural environment of preliminary schools. The participants were 15 students from multicultural preliminary schools and teachers in charge of those students. The relevant data were collected via observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The results of the case study were as follows. First, multicultural preliminary schools focused on teaching Korean language and culture, serving as initial organizations that help immigrant youths adjust to new surroundings and facilitate a smooth transition to local schools. In the beginning, immigrant youths went through a period of struggle, owing to problems resulting from the unfamiliar environment and language, reunion with family and restructuration efforts within it. These problems arose particularly from the differences in educational method or syllabus and school regulations. But they gradually adjusted to their new lives and actively participated in school activities. These pupils underwent a great deal of trial and error in adjusting to school activities and learning arising from the difference in culture between their home country and Korea. Their relationships with parents, teachers, and friends were instrumental in adjusting to multicultural preliminary school. With the numbers increasing, the current situations demands more systematically and realistically tailored education for adjustment of these pupils.
