코퍼스 활용 자료주도학습 활동을 통한 고등학생의 인지전략 발달과정 분석

국문 초록

학습자가 직접 코퍼스 자료를 탐색하는 자료주도학습(Data-Driven-Learning, 이하 DDL) 활동은 학습자 중심(learner-centered)의 발견학습(discovery learning)이며, 2015개정 영어과 교육과정에서 중요시하는 과정중심학습(process-based learning)이라 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 성인 학습자라 할 수 있는 대학생의 인지전략 발달 과정을 분석한 Chun(2011)의 연구를 기반으로 하여, 본 연구를 통해 성인 학습자와 십대 고등학생 학습자의 인지전략 발달 과정을 비교·분석해 보고자 한다. 경기도 수원시 소재 인문계 고등학교 18~19세 사이의 3학년 재학생 중 40명의 지원자를 대상으로, 2달간 3차례의 사용자 직접수행 콘코던스(paper-based hand-on concordance)를 활용한 자료주도학습(DDL) 활동을 실시하였다. COCA(the Corpus of Contemporary American English)를 통해 목표 어휘와 관련된 자료 가운데 추출한 샘플을 활용하여, 사용자 직접수행 콘코던스 학습자료(paper-based hand-on concordance)를 제작하고 연구 도구로 활용하였다. 학습자가 직접 작성한 보고서를 토대로 학습자의 인지 전략 발휘 상태에 대해 질적으로 분석하여 정리하였고, 인터뷰와 관찰 노트와 같은 다른 자료들을 통해 학습자의 보고서 분석을 보완하였다. 연구 결과에 따르면 대부분의 학습자는 비록 3회의 짧은 자료주도학습 활동 속에서도 다양한 인지 전략을 사용하는 것을 보여주었고, 자신의 발견을 논리적이고 객관적으로 입증해 보이기 위해 지속적으로 다른 인지 전략으로 전환하여 사용하려는 것이 밝혀졌다. 또한, 이러한 인지전략의 발전과정이 성인 학습자의 발전과정과 매우 유사함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 사실을 바탕으로 학습자가 직접 과제를 수행하는 과정 속에서 십대 고등학생 학습자도 충분히 귀납적 추론 사고의 과정과 그들의 인지 전략을 발전시켜나갈 수 있음을 보여주었다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 코퍼스 기반 자료주도 학습활동이 고등학생의 귀납적 추론 사고 능력을 향상시킬 수 있으며, 나아가 새로운 교수학습법으로 사용가능함을 보여준다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The corpus activity based on the Data-Driven-Learning(hereafter DDL) is a typical type of discovery learning style by the learner-centered learning process and also a process-based learning style. In this paper, the researcher investigates how Korean high school students develop their use of cognitive skills while using corpus-based learning activities based on the DDL. The study was conducted with 40 male high school students at a boys’ high school located in Kyounggi Province, South Korea; the students were 3rd-year students 18 to 19 years old. They completed concordance tasks three times over a two-month period. By using the Corpus of Contemporary American English(COCA), the researcher created three paper-based hand on-concordance. Each participant’s report was analyzed qualitatively by adopting Chun’s(2011) descriptions on learners’ types of cognitive skills. Participants’ reports were also supplemented with other sources such as interviews and observation notes. The results showed that high school students were developing different cognitive skills over the course of the three tasks and communicated different descriptions to make their findings logical and objective. This suggests that they made progress in their use of cognitive skills and improved their abilities in inductive thinking strategies while doing three tasks. Thus, it can be said that high school students can improve their own inductive thinking skills through corpus-based DDL. A corpus-based approach might be used as a new teaching method for improving the inductive thinking skills of high school students.
