글자 간 간격이 한글 문장의 읽기 속도에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 글자 간 간격이 한글 문장의 읽기 속도에 미치는 영향을 검토하였다. 글자 간 간격은 인터넷 표준 간격을 기준으로 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2배를 하여 조작되었고, 글자 간 간격 효과는 인터넷 표준 글자 크기의 0.5, 1, 2배의 세 글자 크기에서 살펴보았다. 문장 읽기 시간은 읽기 속도(1분당정확하게 읽은 어절 수)로 변환하였고, 간격 임계치와 최대 읽기 속도가 함께 추정되었다. 읽기 속도는 간격이 넓어짐에 따라 증가하다가 간격 임계치에 도달한 뒤 유지되었으며 가장 넓은 간격에서는약간 감소하였다. 간격에 따른 읽기 속도의 변화 양상은 가장 큰 글자 크기에서 두드러지게 나타났다. 간격 임계치는 기준 간격의 0.75배 수준으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 한글 글자 간 간격이 한글 문장의 읽기 속도에 체계적인 영향을 미치는 중요한 변인임을 확인하였다. 또한 글자 간 간격 효과는글자 크기의 효과와 상호작용함을 관찰하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 효과적인 읽기를 위해 적절한 수준의 글자 간 간격을 사용하는 것이 필요하며 한국의 인터넷 환경에서 사용되는 표준 간격보다 간격을더 줄여 사용하는 것이 바람직하다는 것을 시사한다.

영문 초록

We investigated the effect of character spacing on reading speed in Korean sentences. The spacing conditions were manipulated as 0.5, 0.75, 1, 1.5, and 2 times the standard spacing on the internet. Spacing effects were examined in three different character sizes - 0.5, 1, and 2 times the standard character size on the Korean Internet. The reading times for sentences were converted into reading speed (words per minute). Critical spacing and maximum reading speed were also estimated. The reading speed increased with spacing, up to a critical spacing, and then remained constant and decreased slightly for the larger spacing. The changing pattern of reading speed as a function of spacing was magnified for the largest character size. The critical spacing was 75% of the standard spacing. The results confirmed that spacing between Hangul characters is a critical variable which affects reading speed systematically in Hangul sentences. Further, character spacing was interacted with character size. It is necessary to use an appropriate level of spacing for effective reading. Specifically it is desirable to reduce spacing from the standard spacing on the Korean Internet environment.
