은퇴를 앞둔 중등여교사의 자아정체성 재탐색에 관한 연구

국문 초록

일하는 여성은 중년기에 인생의 가치와 목표를 재정립하는 동시에 침체와 혼란으로 인한 위기를 마주하게 된다. 이러한 위기는 상황적, 발달적으로 구분할 수 있는데, 발달적 위기로는 노령화 및 심리사회적 변화를, 상황적 위기로는 은퇴를 제시할 수있다. 그중에서도 학생들의 성장을 돕고 사회인으로 배양하는 역할을 수행하는 여교 사들이 은퇴를 앞둔 시점에서 어떠한 정체성 위기를 겪고 있는지를 탐색할 필요가 있다. 이에 이 연구는 중년 여성으로서, 직업상의 정체성 변화를 겪고 있는 중등 교사로 서, 그리고 삶의 중요한 사건인 은퇴를 준비하는 예비은퇴자로서 이들이 경험하는 정체성 변화를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연구를 위하여 2019년 3월부터 2020년 5월까지 은퇴를 7년에서 1년 정도 앞둔 여교사 7명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 수행하였다. 주제분석 기법을 이용하여 이들의 내러티브를 분석한 결과, 자아정체성 변화와 관련된 7가지 주제가 도출되었고, 이들 주제는 1) 일 역할 상실, 2) 초기 발달적 위기의 재출현, 3) 단절된 자아, 4) 정체성의 연속성, 5) 새로운 자아의 원천 탐색, 6) 윤리적 존재양식으로 서의 교사, 그리고 7) 보살핌 역할의 확장으로 나타났다. 은퇴를 앞둔 중등여교사들은 삶의 전환기에 혼란을 겪고 있지만 자신의 정체성을 능동적으로 재탐색하면서, 정체 성이 고정적인 것이 아닌 끊임없이 변화하는 유동적인 실체임을 보여주고 있다. 연구 결과를 토대로 후속 연구에의 시사점이 제언되었다.

영문 초록

Working women re-establish life s values and goals in their middle ages, and at the same time, face a crisis caused by stagnation and confusion. A mid-life crisis tends to be coincidental with the decision to retire and the loss of work role following retirement can influence identity struggle for these retirees. While previous research has mainly focused on male retirees, it is necessary to explore what kind of identity crisis female teachers, who play a role of teaching students and cultivating them as members of society, are going through ahead of retirement. This study attempted to explore identity changes experienced by middle-aged women secondary school teachers undergoing changes in their work role and as pre-retirees preparing for retirement, an important event in their lives. As participants of the study, 7 female teachers who were 1 to 7 years ahead of retirement were interviewed. As a result of analyzing their narratives, seven major themes related to their self-identity were drawn: 1) loss of work role, 2) re-emergence of earlier developmental crises, 3) disconnected self, 4) continuity of identity, 5) search for new sources of self, 6) teacher as an ethical way of existence, and 7) expansion of the caring role. Secondary school female teachers who are about to retire were experiencing confusion during the transition of their lives, but also actively re-searching for their new identity, showing that identity is not a fixed but a constantly changing, fluid entity. Based on the results, implications for future research were suggested.
