국문 초록

현재 사립대학은 학력인구감소, 대학 역할에 대한 다양한 사회적 요구, 재정적 지원 감소 등 처한 현실을 직시하고 미래지향적이며 발전 가능한 형태의 구조를 모색하기 위해 분투하고 있다. 본 연구는 현실적 어려움으로 올해 폐지된 비교과 영어프로그램의 문제점을 파악하고 앞으로의 방향성을 제고해보는 데 목적을 두고, 해당 대학생 864명을 대상으로 이루어진 요구분석 설문조사를 바탕으로 전환방향을 모색하고자 한다. 설문조사 결과. 첫째, 비교과 영어프로그램에 대해 대다수의 학생들이 다양한 홍보 채널을 통해 인지하고 있음에도 불구하고, 참여율이 저조한 원인은 ‘비싼 수강료’, ‘대학 수업과의 수강 시간대 충돌’ 등에 있다. 둘째, 학점 인정과 더불어 장학금 지원이 프로그램 참여 동기를 부여하는 데 도움이 된다. 셋째, 대다수가 단기 취업영어 캠프를 선호하지만, 최종수강의사는 수강료에 달려있다고 응답하였다. 선행연구와 설문조사 결과를 바탕으로 비교과 영어교육에 대한 앞으로의 비전을 제시하자면, 교내 전임강사의 비교과 과목 시수 인정으로 우수한 교수진 확보와 수강료 부담을 줄이고, 학생의 요구에 부합한 교과과정을 제공해야한다. 또한, 교내의 모든 비교과 프로그램들만을 총괄하는 부서가 지정되어 교내 프로그램들 간의 중복을 피하고 재정적인낭비를 없애야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this case study is to examine how college extracurricular English program should be run based on needs analysis of the program, and their English learning experience. For that purpose, 864 female college students participated in the survey. The results of the survey shows that 1) although the majority of the students were well aware of the program, only one fourth of them participated in the program due to certain barriers; 2) To overcome those barriers, it is necessary to lower the tuition and run programs reflecting their actual needs and learning experience; 3) Plus, university credits and scholarships are reported to encourage student participation; 4) Despite a strong preference for an intensive English program for job-seeking, it is found that student participation largely depends on the tuition. These findings suggest that the university needs to design the English program tailoring to student needs and learning experience. This study is significant in that it gives a direction how university should design a student-based extracurricular English program. University can reduce the burden of student tuition and improve the program quality by getting full-time lecturers to teach extracurricular English programs. Also, it is imperative that university set up customized programs that suits student needs. Finally, a department that oversees all extracurricular programs should be designated to avoid duplication and stop wasting university budget.
