국문 초록

이 글은 1910년대 말에서 20년대 초까지 이루어졌던 조선 문단의 ‘자연주의’ 담론을 문화 번역의 측면에서 살펴봄으로써 프랑스 자연주의 문학과의 차이가 생기게 된 이유를 밝히고자 한다. 일본의 ‘자연주의’의 수용과정이 그러했듯이, 조선에서의 ‘자연주의’ 역시 서구 특히, 프랑스의 ‘자연주의’ 문학과는 상당히 다른 양상을 띠고 있었다. 즉, 프랑스의 자연주의가 과학적 관찰과 해부학적 분석을 창작 방법으로 선택하여 작가의 주관을 배제하고, 세계에 대해 철저하게 객관적 거리를 유지한 것에 반하여 일본과 조선의 ‘자연주의’는 개인의 추악한 내면을 폭로하거나(일본 사소설), 세계에 대한 일관된 인식을 가진 주체의 형성(염상섭의 자연주의 예술관)을 보여줌으로써 오히려 서구의 ‘낭만주의’의 성격이 더 강하였다. 따라서 일본과 조선의 ‘자연주의’는 사실상 ‘낭만주의’의 성격을 띠고 있었다는 것이 일반적인 견해이다. 또한 이러한 현상이 일어난 원인은 서구의 문예사조가 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 기존의 문예사조에 저항하고 반성하는 과정 속에서 형성된 것과 달리, 조선의 경우는 대부분의 문예사조가 단기간에 수용되는 과정에서 발생한 오역(誤譯)이라고 분석된다. 그러나 일본과 조선의 자연주의와 낭만주의가 서구문예사조로서 비슷한 시기에 함께 소개되는 바람에 오해와 혼동을 초래했다는 기존의 설명방식은 ‘자연주의’나 ‘낭만주의’라는 문예사조를 서구의 기준에서만 판단한 것이다. 이처럼 서구적 관점에서 판단하게 된다면 조선의 ‘자연주의’는 ‘진정한 의미’의 자연주의가 아닌, 오역되고 뒤섞인 미완성의 ‘자연주의’라는 결론을 초래하여 조선 문학의 미숙성을 확인하는 것에서 논의가 그치고 만다. 따라서 보다 발전적인 논의를 위해서는 1910~20년대 조선 문단에 서구의 ‘자연주의’가 수용되는 과정에서 어떠한 변형과 확장이 이루어졌는가를 살펴보는 것이 타당할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the reason why the discourse of naturalism in Korean literature from the late 1910s to the early 20th century was different from French naturalism literature in terms of cultural translation. Just as the acceptance process of Japanese naturalism was so, naturalism in Joseon was also quite different from that of naturalism in Western countries, especially in France. In other words, French naturalism selected scientific observation and anatomical analysis as a method of creation, thereby excluding the subjectivity of the artist and maintaining a thorough objective distance to the world. On the other hand, the naturalism of Japan and Joseon was more similar to the romanticism of the West, by exposing the inner ugliness of the individual or by showing the inner side of the new modern subject. Therefore, naturalism of Japan and Korea was in fact the character of romanticism . The cause of this phenomenon differs from that of the West, and in the case of Joseon, it is interpreted as a mistake that occurred during the process of accepting most literary texts in a short period of time. However, the existing explanation that Japanese and Korean naturalism and romanticism are introduced together in the same time as western literary artifacts led to misunderstanding and confusion, and the existing method of explaining naturalism or romanticism will be. Thus, if we judge from the Western point of view, the naturalism of Chosun comes to the conclusion that it is the unfinished naturalism , which leads to the conclusion that Chosun literature is immature. Therefore, it would be appropriate to examine what kind of transformation and expansion was made in the process of accepting Western naturalism in the Joseon period of 1910s ~ 20s.
