국문 초록

본고의 목적은 제2언어습득에서 발음의 결정적 시기와 성인 학습자의 발음 습득의 가능성에 대하여 고찰하고 이를 토대로 통역 목적 한국어 발음 교육 방안에 시사하는 바를 규명하는 것이다. 한국어교육에서는 결정적 시기 가설이 널리 공유되어 언어의 습득 시기는 사춘기 이전이 최적이며, 그 이후에는 매우 어렵다고 간주되고 있다. 한편 최근에는 발음 영역 이외의 어휘 등의 영역에서는 결정적 시기가 지난 이후에도 원어민 화자 수준까지 도달할 가능성이 보인다고 하고 있다. 그러나 다른 영역에 비해 발음능력은 결정적 시기가 지나면 원어민 화자와 같은 발음을 습득하는 것이 거의 불가능에 가깝다는 견해가 바뀌지 않고 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 원어민 수준에 도달할 수 있는지 성인 학습자의 발음 습득의 가능성에 대해 고찰하고 그리고 이러한 견해를 토대로 통역 목적 등 최고급 수준을 지향하는 한국어 발음 교육에 시사하는 바를 밝혀볼 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the critical period of pronunciation in the second language acquisition and the possibility of acquiring the pronunciation of adult learners and to clarify the implications of this view on the teaching of Korean pronunciation. It has widely been believed that when it comes to learning a new language as a second language, “the younger the better” is the rule that applies. The claim that an authentic pronunciation of a second language is unattainable after a certain age has been supported by certain kinds of evidence. However, it is also true that there are, in actuality, some individuals who have acquired a native-like accent even after the so-called “critical period.” In this paper, I will discuss the probability of obtaining native-like phonological performance by reviewing the existing empirical and theoretical literature on Second Language Acquisition, especially that which focuses on the Critical Period Hypothesis. In addition, I will consider the viability of direct phonological instruction as a subject in Korean Pronunciation Education, based on the information and insights gained through this review of key studies in the field.
