혐오 발화, 그 억압의 두 얼굴: ‘문화제국주의’와 ‘폭력’

국문 초록

사회적 집단을 표적으로 삼는 혐오를 어떻게 개념화할 것인가의 문제는 혐오 발화의 사회적 현상을 분석하고 그것이 일으키는 문제들의 해결 방향을 설정하기 위해 해결해야 할 기본적이고도 중요한 과제이다. 이 글은 한국 사회에서 나타난 여성혐오발화 현실과 관련지어, 사회 집단을 향한 혐오를 정치적 권력 작용이라는 관점에서 접근한다. 이를 위해, 먼저 혐오를 심리적 감정으로 접근하는 누스바움(Martha Nussbaum)의 논의에서부터 출발하여, 70-80년대 미국여성운동에서 여성혐오를 사회정치적 문제로 부각시킨 맥키논(Catharine MacKinnon)과 드워킨(Andrea Dworkin)의 반-포르노그래피 논의를 분석한다. 이 과정을 통해 왜 혐오의 문제를 ‘집단 간 불평등한 권력’의 맥락 위에서 접근해야 하는지가 밝혀질 것이다. 마지막으로, 사회 집단을 향한 혐오는 불평등한 권력 관계 속에서 우위를 점하고 있는 권력 집단이 자신의 특권적 집단 정체성을 교란하고 위협할 것으로 우려되는 하위집단에게 가하는 폭력적인 권력 행사임을 영(Iris Marion Young)의 ‘문화제국주의’와 ‘체계적 폭력’이라는 개념을 통해 명료화한다.

영문 초록

The issue that how to conceptualize disgust targeting social group is an essential and important task to analyze social phenomena of hate speech and to set orientation for solving problems derived from it. This article, with regard to the reality of speech of misogyny in Korean society, approaches to disgust towards social group in the perspective of action of political power. For this, starting from arguments of Martha Nussbaum, who considers disgust as a psychological emotion, the article analyzes the debate of anti-pornography by Catharine MacKinnon and Andrea Dworkin who emphasized misogyny as a social-political issue in the American feminist movement in the 1970 s and 1980 s. Through this process, this paper is revealed that why the issue of disgust should be dealt in the context of unequal power between groups . Finally, it is clarified that disgust towards social group is violent power action of a power group dominating in unequal power relation, against subgroups which are considered to disturb and threat its privileged group identity trough concepts of cultural imperialism and systematic violence of Iris Marion Young.
