아베 코보의『모래의 여자』에 나타난 실존적 존재 인식

국문 초록

본고는 아베 코보(安部公房)의 장편 소설『모래의 여자』에 나타난 모래와 여자에 내재된 부조리와 반항을 통해 주인공 남자의 실존적 존재 인식 과정을 고찰하고자 하였다. 도시라는 일상을 떠나 자유를 추구하고자 하는 주인공 남자가 모래 구덩이에 갇히게 되면서 그 속에 있던 여자와 또 다른 반복된 일상을 시작하며 재차 자유를 획득하려는 탈출 과정이 그려져 있는데, 그것은 인간 본연의 존재 의미와 연관되어 있다. 즉 남자 또한 갇힌 모래 일상에서 ‘희망’이란 이름의 물 발견 - 창조적 행위 - 은, 지금까지 무의미하다고 여겼던 모래 일상을 희망과 자유의 일상으로 변화시키는 계기가 되고 있다. 이것은 현재 남자에게 주어진 일상과 모래 퍼내기 반복은 고통과 무의미가 아닌 희망과 정열 그리고 자유를 꿈꿀 수 있다는 자신의 실존적 존재 가치와 의의를 확인시켜 주는 것이라 하겠다. 이처럼 작품은 우리들이 일상을 살아가면서, 어느 순간 느끼게 되는 부조리한 감정과 “도대체 삶에 어떤 의미가 있는가?”라는 의문에 대한 하나의 해답을 제공하고 있는데, 그것은 근대로 들어오면서 신을 대신하여 각 개인이 그 해답을 찾을 수밖에 없음을 의미하기도 한다. 결국, 우리들은 자신의 숙명 속에 끊임없이 자유를 희구하며, “나는 반항한다. 고로 나는 존재한다”라는 명제 하에서 스스로 실존적 존재 의미를 찾아야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study considers the process of the recognition of existential existence, through the implicit irrationality and resistance represented in the sand and woman of the novel The Woman in the Dunes written by Kobe Abe. A man pursuing freedom away from daily life of the city comes to be locked in the Dunes, and he gets to start another repetitive daily life with the woman there, intending to acquire freedom. This process of escape is associated with the true meaning of existence of human being. A man also comes to discover water named ‘hope’ in the locked daily life, which is a creative action. Daily life of sand which has been regarded as meaningless until now comes to serve as a momentum to turn daily life into one full of hope and freedom. Furthermore, only in current daily life given to the man and repetitive action of pumping sand out, he can dream of hope, passion and freedom, not of pain and meaninglessness. This confirms the value and significance of his existence. As mentioned before, The Woman in the Dunes suggests an answer to the irrational emotion and a question “what on earth is the point of living in daily life?” At the turn of modern times from the Middle Ages, we human beings may be destined to seek an answer on behalf of God, for God exists no longer. As Sisyphe rolls a rock onto the mountain because of tragic punishment in Le Mythe de Sisyphe, we seek freedom constantly in our destiny, and have to pursue the meaning of existential existence ourselves under the proposition that “I resist, therefore I exist.”
