공교육 중심의 자기주도적 영어학습을 하는 초등학생과 학부모의 영어교육에 대한 인식

국문 초록

본 연구는 영어사교육이나 해외 거주 경험이 거의 없이 자기주도적으로 영어를 학습하는 초등학생과 그들의 학부모를 대상으로 영어교육 관련 인식과 실행 및 제언에 대해 알아보고자 했다. 이를 위해 4, 6학년 5명의 학생들과 그들의 학부모 5명 총 10명을 대상으로 반구조화된 심층면담을 각 3회씩 총 30회를 진행했다. 수집된 면담 자료는 질적으로 분석되었고 주요 결과는 다음과 같다: 첫째, 영어를 공부하는 이유로 학생들은 영어에 대한 흥미를, 학부모들은 미래를 위한 준비를 가장 많이 언급했 다. 학생들과 학부모들의 답변을 통합하면 영어공부 이유가 의사소통능력 신장이라는 답변이 가장 많았다. 영어공교육에 대한 장단점은 영어사교육의 장단점과 상호보 완적인 것으로 나타났다. 영어사교육 미실시는 연구 참여자별로 학생이나 학부모가 결정했다. 학부모들은 영어사교육 미실시에 불안해했지만, 학생들은 현재 영어교육 방법에 만족하고 있었다. 둘째, 학생들의 영어학습 방법은 개인별로 다양했는데, 영어책 읽기, EBSe 수강 중심, 영어 방과후수업을 위주로 학습했다. 학생들은 공통적 으로 영어학습에 대한 흥미와 자기주도성이 높았으며, 학부모들은 자녀들이 자기관 리를 잘 하기를 바라면서 자율성을 부여했다. 셋째, 연구 참여자들이 성공적인 영어 교육을 위해 바라는 점으로 학교 영어프로그램 및 영어도서관 활성화, 영어수업시수 증대, 영어 1학년 도입 등이 제안되었다. 전반적으로 자기주도적 영어학습을 위해서는 흥미, 동기, 자율성이 중요하며, 가정에서 영어학습 분위기를 조성하는 등 지원이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 영어공교육 중심의 자기주도적 영어학습 사례로 영어학습에 대한 다양한 인식과 방법을 제시해, 학생, 학부모, 교사, 교사교육가, 정책입안가들에게 시사점을 제공하고 있다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to investigate five self-directed elementary students’ and their parents’ perceptions of English education, implementation of English learning, and suggestions for English education in Korea. Three sessions of semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant, and the data were analyzed qualitatively. The findings are as follows: First, regarding the reasons for learning English, students cited their interest in English, while parents mentioned preparation for the future most frequently. For both students and parents, the development of English communicative competence was mentioned most frequently. Advantages and disadvantages in the English public education system and private sector education were complimentary. Decisions on receiving private lessons was made by the individual student or his/her parents. While parents were anxious about their children not receiving private lessons, students were satisfied with public education alone. Second, English learning styles were varied among individuals including reading English books, watching EBSe programs, or after-school lessons. Students had high interest in English and autonomy, and parents asked them to manage their English learning and allowed them for autonomy. Third, the participants’ suggestions for English education included creating more English programs at school, providing more English books and materials at the school library, increasing English lesson hours at school, and starting official English education from the first grade. This study shows that a student’s interest, motivation, and autonomy regarding English learning are important, and his/her parents’ support for creating an English-learning atmosphere is necessary for the student’s self-directed learning. This case study provides various perceptions and methods about English learning with students, parents, teachers, teacher educators, and policy makers and gives important pedagogical implications.
