국문 초록

외국어 교육에 있어 문화는 의사소통 능력을 향상시키는데 반드시 필요한 교육의 영역이다. 이를 반영하여 2009 개정 영어과 교육과정에서는 문화교육과 언어교육의 병행을 강조하였으며, 2015 개정 영어과 교육과정에서는 구체적인 문화교육 성취 목 표를 제시하고 있다. 그러나 선행연구에 따르면 여전히 영어 수업 시간에 문화교육 은 제대로 이루어지지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구는 향후 문화교육 방향 정립을 위해, 문화를 학습자에게 소개하고 가르치는 중요한 주체인 영어 교사의 문 화교육에 대한 인식과 실태를 설문조사 하였다. 연구 결과 교사의 문화적 배경 지식 의 부족, 문화교육에 필요한 교수·학습 모델과 교재의 부재, 영어 평가에 문화 항목 이 포함되지 않는다는 이유로 영어 수업에서 문화 교육이 활발하게 이루어지지 않 고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 문화교육 필요성에 대한 교사들의 인식도 상대적으 로 낮은 것으로 드러났다. 따라서 문화교육의 활성화를 위해, 문화 항목을 평가에 반영하고, 문화교육을 지원할 수 있는 다양한 교재와 교수·학습 모델을 개발하며, 문 화교육 관련 교사연수 프로그램을 실시해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Although an understanding of teachers conceptions of teaching culture and their practices is central to the designing of English curriculum and teaching materials for promoting culture education, few studies have investigated teachers’ conceptions and practices with regard to cultural education. This research explores the conceptions and practices of culture education in English lessons held by 48 Korean high school English teachers. Questionnaire responses were analyzed to understand teachers’ conceptions on culture education and how they implement it within their English lessons. The results of the current study show that although most teachers believe culture education to be important in improving learners’ communicative competence, they struggle to implement it in their English lessons for the following reasons: (a) teachers themselves lack the necessary cultural background knowledge; (b) culture education is not included in statutory English testing, and (c) there is a lack of relevant teaching models and materials. These findings suggest that in-service culture education training courses would be valuable for teachers in extending their knowledge of other cultures and clarifying their own culture values. Also, culture education should be reflected in statutory English testing. Finally, more research is needed in order to develop teaching models and materials that support culture education.
