Fingerprints are one of physical evidence to identify personal information owing to permanent information of each person. Owing to these properties, discovery and detection of fingerprint is important process in forensic science. Especially, reveal and identification of invisible fingerprints (called to latent fingerprints) can contribute on investigation of the crime scene. On the rigid surface of evidence, the general detection method of latent fingerprints is powdering method. The fingerprinting powder is categorized according by its composition and properties; regular, metallic and luminescent powders. Despite using the regular and metallic fingerprint powder are simple and easy methods, both types of powder have problems with their low contrast, low sensitivity, high background interference and high toxicity. In order to solve these problem, fluorescent fingerprint powder with strong fluorescent emission, small particle size, high contrast and high adhesive properties is being studied, recently. However, the application of the latent fingerprints detection was not studied in phosphate materials. Among the phosphate materials, Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ phosphors exhibits an excitation band between UV to blue region and strong red emission centered at 669 nm, which is a favorable candidate for the red phosphor of white LED lamps. In this study Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ was synthesized by high-energy ball milling method. The effects of the sintering temperature on the crystalline phase, surface morphology and luminescence properties of the Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ powders are discussed.
