Luminescent properties of Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ Red Phosphor Synthesized by Sol-Gel Method

Phosphors are widely used in various application, such as solid state lighting, bio-labeling and thermometry. In particular, a fabrication of GaN based light emitting diodes (LEDs) promote research and application of the inorganic phosphor to fabricate in white LEDs. The phosphors has a key role to generating high color rendering white light because properties of phosphors directly related with the luminous efficiency, color purity, reliability and lifetime of white LEDs. Commercial white LEDs, Ce³⁺ ion doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce³⁺) phosphor, are combined with blue LED chip have been widely used because YAG: Ce³⁺ shows an efficient broad luminescence in the yellow region at around 530 nm by exciting with blue radiation near 460 nm. However, these white LEDs emit the white light with low color rendering index owing to the lack of red component.
In order to solve this problem, blue-light excitable and red-emitting phosphors have been extensively studied such as nitride, sulfide and aluminate phosphor. Recently, phosphate phosphor have emerged as interesting host materials because of their low synthetic temperature, high brightness, high physical and chemical stability, and ease of control over particle size¹. Among the phosphate materials, Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ phosphors exhibits an excitation band between UV to blue region and strong red emission centered at 669 nm, which is a favorable candidate for the red phosphor of white LED lamps.
In this study, Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ phosphors were synthesized by sol-gel method. The effects of the Eu²⁺ concentration on the crystalline phase, surface morphology and luminescence properties of the Ca₄(PO₄)₂O:Eu²⁺ powders are discussed.
