기호 인지 체계의 전환 측면에서 글자 그림책의 교육적 활용 방안

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 기호 인지 체계의 전환 측면에서 글자 그림책의 교육적 활용 방향을 탐색하였다. 방법 인지신경과학의 연구 성과를 토대로 읽기 학습에 동반된 기호 인지 체계의 전환에 대해 논의하였다. 기호 인지 체계의 전환이란 동일한 시각 및 청각 기호를 이전과 다른 방식으로 처리함을 의미한다. 초기 읽기 차원에서 글자 그림책의 교육적 활용은 능숙한 해독을 위한 전문가적 시스템의 구축에 방점을 둘 필요가 있다. 결과 글자 그림책은 글자의 형태에 대한 시각적 식별, 단어와 재소의 재인 및 결합, 음운과 표기의 대응을 익히는 데에 효과적이다. 이런 견지에서 이 연구는 글자 그림책의 교육적 활용 방안으로 ‘낱자의 다양한 형태에 대한 시각적 노출’, ‘자모 분리 및 조합의 연습 기회 제공’, ‘음운과 표기의 대응 관계 숙달을 위한 놀이’ 등을 제안하였다. 결론 이 연구는 글자 그림책을 중심으로 인지신경과학의 연구 성과와 초기 읽기 학습 간의 교육적 접목을 시도하였다. 읽기와 관련한 인지신경과학적 연구는 읽기 능력의 발달 및 읽기 학습에 대해 간과할 수 없는 발견을 제시하고 있다. 앞으로 읽기를 중심으로 다양한 학문 분야 간에 생산적인 소통이 이루어지길 기대한다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study explored the educational use of lettered picture books in terms of shifting the symbol cog-nition system. Methods Based on research in cognitive neuroscience, we discuss the symbolic cognitive switch that accom-panies learning to read. Symbolic cognition shifts mean that the same visual and auditory symbols are processed in different ways than before. At the early reading level, the educational use of picture books needs to focus on building an expert system for skillful decoding. Results Letter picture books are effective in promoting visual identification of letter forms, recognition and com-bination of words and materials, and mastery of phonological and representational correspondences. In light of this, the study suggested the following educational uses of letter picture books: visual exposure to different letter forms, opportunities to practice separating and combining graphemes, and play for mastery of phonological and representational correspondences. Conclusions This study attempts to bridge the gap between research in cognitive neuroscience and early reading learning by focusing on lettered picture books. Cognitive neuroscience research on reading has provided insights into the development of reading skills and learning to read that cannot be ignored. We look forward to productive communication between various academic disciplines centered on reading.
