명화 소재 소설 속에 나타나는 하녀상의 영화적 변용

국문 초록

본 연구는 요하네스 베르메르(Johannes Vermeer)의 명작 <진주 귀걸이를 한 소녀>를 소재로 한 동명 소설과영화에 나타나는 하녀상을 계급, 젠더와 섹슈얼리티 관점에서 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 계급성은 소설보다 영화에서 명확하게 나타났다. 소설은 그리트(Griet)에게 하녀로서의 역할을 인식시키면서도 그녀가 그림을 이해하려는 시도와 예술적 체험에 초점을 두고 그리고 있다. 이에 비하여 영화에서는하녀로서의 역할과 위치를 부각시킨다. 이러한 계급성은 주거공간과 음식, 의상 등에서도 이항대립을 통해 충실하게 재현된다. 특히 다양한 오브제들과 미장센을 통해 계급성은 소설보다 영화에서 강화된 형태로 드러난다. 그리트의 젠더와 섹슈얼리티는 영화보다 소설에서 더욱 강조된다. 예로부터 일반적으로 화가는 보는 주체가 되고 여성 모델은 보여지는 객체로서 자리해왔다. 그러나 <진주 귀걸이를 한 소녀> 영화에서 그리트와 베르메르는계급 차이에도 불구하고 그들 간의 시선은 평등하게 그려진다. 또한 그리트는 피터와의 혼전 성애적 행위에 있어서도 주도적인 역할을 하고 있어 성역할 고정관념을 교란한다. 본 연구 결과는 17세기 네덜란드 시대의 계급의식, 젠더와 섹슈얼리티가 소설 속에서 어떻게 재현되고, 또 영화에서 변용되는지에 대한 이해에 도움이 될 것이다. 향후 회화를 소재로 하는 소설과 영화 작품을 대상으로 하여, 소설적 상상력과 영화적 변용이 독자와 관객에게 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대한 보다 깊이 있는 연구가 이루어지길 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the image of maids appeared in novel and film of the same name with the material of , a masterpiece by Johannes Vermeer from the perspective of class, gender and sexuality. As a result of the study, classification appeared more clearly in film than the novel. The novel focused on Griet’s attempt to understand painting and her artistic experience while recognizing a role as a maid. On the other hand, the film emphasized the role and position as a maid. This classification is faithfully reproduced through binary oppositions in terms of living space, food and clothes. In particular, the classification is revealed in improved form in films than novel through various objects and miseenscene. Gender and sexuality of Griet are further emphasized in novel than the film. From old times, the painter has been positioned as ‘seeing subject’ and female model has been positioned as ‘visible object’. However, in the film of , views of Griet and Vermeer are drawn as equally despite of their difference in class. In addition, Griet plays a leading role in premarital sexual action with Peter, disturbing stereotype for gender role. The results of this study will he helpful to understand how class consciousness, gender and sexuality from the Dutch era of the 17th century are reproduced in the novel and how they are adapted in the film. I hope that more in-depth study on how fictitious imagination and cinematic adaptation affect readers and audiences will be made for the novels and films created based on painting in the future.
