고유가치와 효용가치의 양립가능성 문제

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 문화예술 활동에 따른 본질적 가치(고유가치)와 경제적 가치(효용가치)와의 상관관계에 대한 해명을 통해 두 가치가 상호 양립할 수 있는지에 대한 철학적 근거를 마련하려는데 있다. 무엇보다 고유가치와 효용가치의 양립가능성은 문화예술 활동이 경제적 활동을 포함하는 구조로 드러나게 된다는 점을 받아들여야만 할 것이다. 그런데 고유가치와 효용가치의 양립 가능성을 둘러싼 대립의 중심에는 인간과 시장과의 관계를 둘러싸고 전개되는 논변에 대한 이해를 전제로 한다. 이는 곧 인간의 행동이 무엇인가에 대한 문제로 귀착된다. 이에 대해 인간의 모든 행동은 시장 개념으로 이해할 수 있다는 베커의 주장과 모든 인간은 인센티브에 반응한다는 맨큐의 주장 이면에는 인간의 그 어떠한 행위도 시장 개념, 즉 효용가치와 연계된다는 의미를 함축한다. 하지만 베커와 맨큐의 주장을 정당화하기 위한 근거에 관한 문제가 제기된다. 이른바 두 주장에 대한 정당성을 확보하기 위해서는 ‘인간의 본성’에 대한 이해를 전제로 한다. 그 중 하나가 인간은 선천적으로 도덕법칙을 타고난다는 칸트의 입장이라고 한다면, 다른 하나는 인간은 타고나면서 자신의 이익을 극대화하는 존재라는 홉스의 입장을 들 수 있다. 홉스의 입장에 따를 경우 고유가치가 효용가치로의 환원이 가능한 반면, 칸트의 입장에 따를 경우 고유가치와 효용가치는 상호 독립적이다. 따라서 고유가치가 효용가치로 환원되거나 혹은 상호 호환될 수 있다는 측면과 고유 가치와 효용가치는 상호 독립적이라는 측면이 동시에 성립될 수 있다는 점에서 상호 양립 가능하다는 결론으로 귀착된다.

영문 초록

Through elucidating the correlation between the intrinsic value and the economic value (effective value) associated with cultural and art activities, this paper seeks to prepare the philosophical grounds for the compatibility of the two values. Above all, the compatibility of intrinsic value and effective value must accept that cultural and artistic activities are revealed in a structure that includes economic activity. However, at the center of the conflict regarding the potential compatibility of intrinsic value and effective value is the premise of understanding controversy that have been developed around the relationship between humans and the market. This is due to the question of what human behavior is. In contrast, all human actions can be explained by Gary Becker s assertion that all human behavior can be understood by the market concept and Gregory Mankiw’s argument that all humans respond to incentives. In other words, it implies that meaning is associated with utility value. However, questions have been raised regarding the justification for Becker’s and Mankiw s claims. In order to ensure the so-called legitimacy of these claims, an understanding of “human nature” is necessary. One such understanding is that of Immanuel Kant, who believed that human beings were born with and share moral laws. Another understanding of human nature is that of Thomas Hobbes, who propounded that human beings relentlessly pursue their own self-interest. According to the Hobbesian position, unique value can be returned to utility value. However, unique value and utility value are mutually independent in Kant’s view. Therefore, the notion that intrinsic value is returned to utility value or that intrinsic value and the utility value can be established simultaneously as mutually independent aspects can be substantiated through the conclusion that compatibility between the two values is possible.
