국문 초록

마사 누스바움은 저서 「시적 정의」를 중심으로, 문학적 상상력을 통해 도출할 수 있는 공감이 공공의 합리적 추론의 기초가 된다고 보았으며, 공감의 계발을 위하여 소설과 같은 문학작품의 교육이 적극적으로 이루어져야 한다고 주장한다. 애덤 스미스의 ‘분별 있는 관찰자’ 개념에 기초하여, 누스바움은 타자의 현실에 대한 상상력과 이를 비판적으로 성찰하는 능력이 사회정의를 형성하는데 기여할 수 있다고 보고, 이러한 공감의 능력은 재판관, 정책결정자뿐만 아니라 시민에게도 필요하다고 본다. 본 연구는 누스바움의 이러한 논의를 고찰하고, 이 시각이 계획이론과 실천에 함축하는 바를 밝히며, 이를 통해 공공성, 합리성을 학문적 근간으로 삼으면서도 공학적, 기술적 연구에 제한되어온 계획교육 과정에 문학과 같은 스토리텔링, 소설 읽기를 활용한 공감 교육을 도입해야 한다고 본다. 본 연구를 통하여 그간 활발하지 못했던 계획(학)과 공감의 연계에 대한 학문적 탐구 범위를 넓힐 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 사회과학의 한 분과인 계획학과 문학의 융합을 통한 상호 학문적 외연 확장의 가능성을 기대할 수 있다고 본다. 향후 소설 읽기 교육의 구체적 방식 등 교육적 실효성에 관련한 후속 연구들이 활발히 논의되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Using Martha Nussbaum’s book, Poetic Justice, this study examines her perspective on the relationship between literary imagination and empathy as a basis of rationality for facilitating judicial decision-making. This work discusses the implications of her ideas on planning theories and practices, and aims to promote the incorporation of reading and discussion into planning education. Nussbaum has contributed to the theory of social justice by propounding that storytelling and literary imagination are not hindrances to public discourse, but can provide essential components for a rational argument. Inspired by Adam Smith’s concept of “impartial spectator’s judgment,” which is defined as “how people in practice make moral judgements on others,” she explained that the ability to imagine the ways in which other people grapple with hardship is of great public value. Thus, it is critical for citizens and also judges or policy makers to read and discuss literature, which will enable them to envision and empathize with the situations of others. In spite of the emotional turn in social sciences, planners rarely agree on the influence of emotion on planning, because they dichotomize emotion and rationality and consider rationality to be characteristic of planning. However, Nussbaum posited that public emotions such as compassion and empathy can be considered as rational thought. This somewhat controversial viewpoint provides several important insights into planning theory. Her assertion can help planners transcend the fixed boundaries and limitations of utilitarian rational choice models. In addition, narrative literature should be made an essential part of the educational curriculum for public rationality in certain fields, such as urban planning, public policy, and law. In the future, it would be beneficial to conduct detailed research on the concrete methodology of reading education in these fields.
