국문 초록

이 논문은 한국인들이 고려와 조선 시대를 거치며 20세기에 이르기까지 구별되며 독자적인 한 민족으로서의 상대적 위상을 주로 ‘중국’이라는 주요타자와의 관계 하에서 구성해 온 진화의 과정을 단계별로 살펴본다. 즉 이들의 담론에서 드러나는 영토적이고 개념적인 경계구분의 양상의 추이를 통해 동아시아 유교문명권에서의 중국의 위상이 지속적으로 추락해 왔음을 밝힌다. 첫번째 단계에서 주로 고려인들은 그들의 반도국가가 결코 중국의 위성이 아니며 엄연히 구별되며 독립적인 실체로 보고, 때로는 스스로를 ‘소중화’, 즉 작은 중심국가라 칭하기도 했다. 명의 몰락과 함께 시작되는 두번째 단계에서 조선인들은 이제 중국이 명실상부하게 문명의 중심에서 물러났다고 보고 이 변화된 세계질서를 수용할 수 있는 새로운 인식체계를 구성할 필요를 절실히 느끼게 된다. 이어 19세기가 막을 내릴 즈음에 이르자 조선은 세계에 문호를 개방하고 주권국가로서의 지위를 확보하고자 노력하게 되는데, 이 세번째 단계에서 ‘중국’이라는 범주를 그저 ‘열등’하다고 재정의함으로써 자신의 정체성을 재구성하게 된다. 이 논문은 이와 같이 유교문명권이 해체됨에 따라 조선인의 도덕적 담론구조에 근대 민족주의가 거대서사로 자리잡게 된다고 결론을 맺는다.

영문 초록

This essay studies the long evolution of Korean nationhood down to the early twentieth century, through three reasonably distinct stages, primarily in relation to its significant Other － China the Middle Kingdom. The status of China in the Confucian ecumene has declined persistently in the territorial and conceptual mapping of the boundaries in the minds of Koreans. In its first stage, the essay reveals, the Koreans had mapped the world where their peninsular kingdom was no satellite to the Middle Kingdom, but an independent and separate entity even as the ‘Brilliant Centre Minor’. In the second stage, beginning with the fall of the Ming in the seventeenth century, Koreans had to urgently construct a new episteme to deal with the changed world order where China was de-centred. The third stage, from the end of the nineteenth century onward, saw Korea open its door to the world, seeking to assert its status as a sovereign nation. Koreans reconstructed their identity by reinventing the category ‘Chinese’, which was declared simply inferior. As Confucianism was disestablished, the essay concludes, modern nationalism began to take its place as the master narrative in the discursive moral framework of Koreans.
