문화재 인식과 활용의 측면에서 본 천마총의 특징과 위상

국문 초록

최근 경주 도심의 5~6세기 신라 고분에 대한 발굴조사와 주변 환경 정비사업이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 신라 고분의 실체를 좀 더 구체적으로 파악하고 고분에 대한 접근성을 강화해 대중들이 고분을 실감나게 느껴 볼 수 있도록 하기 위해서다. 현재 경주지역 고분 가운데 관람객이 가장 많이 찾는 곳은 천마총이다. 천마총은 1973년에 발굴되었다. 천마총 발굴은 광복 이후 첫 신라 대형고분 발굴이었고, 1만1500여 점의 귀중한 유물이 쏟아져 나왔다. 천마총은 발굴 직후부터 실물 내부를 공개하고 있다. 최근엔 고분 내부의 전시 공간을 발굴 당시 상황에 최대한 가깝게 리모델링했다. 이 논문은 천마총을 대중들이 어떻게 인식하고 향유해왔는지, 문화유산으로서 어떻게 활용하고 있는지 등에 대해 고찰했다. 논의를 위해 천마총의 두드러진 특징을 3가지로 나누어보고 그것의 흐름과 효과 등을 분석했다. 천마총의 두드러진 특징으로는 ①지속적인 내부 개방 ②출토 유물의 파격적 공개 ③〈장니 천마도〉를 둘러싼 논란을 꼽을 수 있다. 국내 고대국가의 왕릉급 고분 가운데 천마총이 유일하게 실물의 내부를 공개하고 있다. 내부 관람은 대중들의 호기심을 충족시키면서 고분이라는 문화유산에 대한 인식을 확산시켰다. 2014년 천마총 출토 유물의 대량으로 공개하고 발굴 당시의 모습에 가깝게 전시한 특별전이 열리면서 천마총을 이해하는데 도움을 주었다. 〈천마도 장니〉를 둘러싼 논란은 역설적으로 천마총에 대한 관심을 확산시키는데 기여했다. 말인지 기인린지의 논쟁을 넘어 신라인들의 신앙에 대한 관심으로 이어졌다. 세 가지 요소들은 1973년 발굴 이후 지금까지 지속적으로 대중들과 학계의 관심을 불러 일으켰다. 이것들은 대중이 천마총을 인식하고 향유하고 문화유산으로 활용하는데 핵심적인 요인으로 작용했다. 이것들은 다른 고분에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 천마총만의 특징이라는 점에서 더욱 주목을 요한다.

영문 초록

The excavation of the Silla tombs from the 5th and 6th centuries in downtown Gyeongju and environmental maintenance projects are under way. The move is aimed at making the ancient tombs feel more real to the public by providing a more detailed understanding of the true nature of the tombs and strengthening access to them. Cheonmachong, excavated in 1973, is currently the most visited ancient tomb in Gyeongju. This was the first excavation of a large ancient tomb in Silla since Korea s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, and 11,500 precious artifacts poured out. The Cheonmachong Tomb has been open to the public since its excavation. Recently, the exhibition space inside the tomb was remodeled to resemble the situation at the time of excavation as closely as possible. This paper considered how the public recognized and enjoyed Cheonmachong and how it was used as a cultural heritage. The outstanding characteristics of Cheonmachong were divided into three categories and the flow-on-effects were analyzed. Among the notable characteristics of Cheonmachong are ①Continuous internal opening; ②Exceptional display of excavated artifacts; ③The controversy over the “Cheonmado.” Among the royal tombs of ancient Korea, Cheonmachong is the only one that reveals the inside of the tombs. This internal view has satisfied the curiosity of the public and spread the awareness of the cultural heritage of ancient tombs. In 2014, a special exhibition was held to reveal a large number of artifacts excavated from Cheonmachong Tomb, displaying them as they looked at the time of the excavation, thus helping people better understand Cheonmachong. The controversy over the “Cheonmado” has ironically contributed to spreading interest in Cheonmachong. The controversy over which animals are depicted in the painting led to the Silla people s interest in faith. These three elements of Cheonmachong have consistently attracted public and academic attention since the excavation in 1973, these characteristics are not found in other ancient tombs. They have played a key role in the public’s awareness of and enjoyment of Cheonmachong and its use as cultural heritage.
