북한 초급중학교 영어교과서의 2013 개정 전ㆍ후 어휘 비교

국문 초록

본 연구는 2013 개정 이후 북한의 영어교육의 특징을 파악하고자 개정 북한 초급중학교 영어교과서의 어휘를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 2013 개정 북한 초급중학교 1~3학년 영어교과서 코퍼스를 구축하였다. 그리고 북한의 교육과정 개정 전ㆍ후의 영어교과서 변화 양상을 살펴보기 위하여 워드스미스툴즈 7.0을 사용하여 비교ㆍ분석하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 어휘 구성 정보를 분석한 결과, 개정 이후 초급중학교 영어교과서 어휘의 전체 출현양은 줄었지만, 다양한 어휘가 제시되었다. 둘째, 고빈도 내용어 분석 결과, 2013 북한 초급중학교 영어교과서에서는 단원 구성 체재, 교과서 활동 구성, 영어교과서 지시문과 관련한 어휘들이 높은 빈도를 나타내었다. 개정 전에 비하여 다양한 활동이 제시 되고, 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기의 언어 기능적인 면이 고르게 구성되어 있음을 확인하였다. 셋째, 핵심어 분석 결과, 영어교과서 활동 지시문과 관련된 어휘 뿐만 아니라 정보ㆍ통신, 문화 관련 어휘가 개정 전보다 많이 등장하였다. 이것으로 북한의 영어교육은 개정 전의 읽기와 문법 중심 교육에서 벗어나 학습자의 적극적인 참여를 유도하는 흥미를 높인 수업이 될 것으로 보여진다. 또한, 정보ㆍ통신과 문화, 타교과 관련 어휘가 증가함에 따라 과거에 비해 수학, 과학, 사회 과목과의 내용통합, 서구문화에 대하여 조금 더 개방적인 면을 찾아 볼 수 있었다. 또한 실리주의를 강조함에 따라, 기존보다 일상적인 대화를 위한 의사소통기능에 중점을 둔 어휘들을 살펴볼 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the vocabulary of the revised English textbook for junior middle schools in North Korea to identify the characteristics of English education in North Korea after the revision of 2013. To that end, it has established the Corpus of North Korean English textbooks for junior middle schools which was revised in 2013. In order to look at the changes in English textbooks before and after the revision of the curriculum in North Korea, textbooks before and after 2013 were compared and analyzed using Word Smith Tools 7.0. The results are as follows: First, after analyzing the vocabulary information, the total amount of English textbook vocabulary in junior middle school has decreased compared to the previous textbooks, but the range of vocabulary has been more diversified. Second, the high-frequency content vocabulary analysis showed that the new English textbooks showed high frequency in vocabulary fields such as unit, textbook activity, and textbook directions. Compared to previous textbooks, activities are more diverse in the new textbooks, and the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are evenly divided. Third, as a result of the keyword analysis, more words related to information, communication and culture as well as activity instructional words were more frequent compared to the pre 2013 textbooks. From this, implications can be drawn as follows: English education in North Korea has expanded to cover listening and speaking with new books compared to the previously reading and grammar focused. In the new textbooks, a group of vocabulary on information science, communication, culture and other subjects increased, and contents integration with other subjects such as mathematics, science and social studies subjects maintained in its high integration rate. It is also found that a slow and gradual opening to Western culture has been in progress.
