폐쇄형 SNS를 활용한 토익 말하기 활동의 효과

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 오늘날 급속히 발달하고 있는 디지털 매체의 하나인 SNS를 이용한 말하기 활동을 실시하여 학습자들의 영어 말하기 능력 향상에 효과가 있는지 살펴보는 것이다. 연구 대상은 토익 스피킹 수업을 수강한 16명의 대학생 학습자들이었으며, 말하기 활동은 카카오 톡의 단체 대화방을 통해 수행되었다. 본 연구에서는 세 가지 영어 말하기 활동이 실시되었는데, 사진 묘사하기, 질문에 답하기, 의견말하기였다. 세 가지 말하기 활동은 카카오 톡의 단체 대화방의 기본 기능이라 할 수 있는 사진 올리기, 실시간 댓글 달기 등을 사용하였으며, 학습자들은 교실과 교실 외에서 말하기 활동을 수행하였다. 말하기 활동은 학습자들에게 토익 스피킹의 기본 문답 유형을 복습시키기 위한 활동이었다. 말하기 활동의 효과를 분석하기 위해 중간고사와 기말고사의 성적을 대응표본 t 검정을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 사진 묘사하기 활동은 중간고사에 비해 기말고사 성적이 상대적으로 가장 많이 향상되었을 뿐만아니라 통계적으로도 유의미하게 나타났다. 질문에 답하기 활동은 중간고사에 비해 기말고사 성적이 다소 낮았으며, 자신의 의견 말하기 활동은 중간고사 보다 기말고사 성적이 향상되었으나 통계적으로 유의미하지는 않았다. 본 연구를 통하여 폐쇄형 SNS를 활용한 영어 말하기 수업은 부분적으로 긍정적 효과가 있음을 알 수 있다. 이것은 영어 말하기 수업에서 카카오 톡을 활용한 활동이 유용하게 활용될 수 있는 가능성을 보여준 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores that the effects of SNS which is one of popular media today on learners English speaking ability. For this, the researcher opened a chatting room on Kakao Talk. Sixteen university students who enrolled TOEIC speaking class participated in the study. There were three speaking activities were used for the purpose of the study. First activity, describe a picture, was that the learners who were required to take a photo outside of the classroom, and upload it and its description on their chatting room. Second one, respond to questions, was that the learners were asked to ask and answer one another on the room by commenting on the previous uploaded test. The last activity, express an opinion, was that the learners should ask and answer on the chatting room outside of the classroom on the weekend. The three speaking activities were based on the basic functions of Kakao Talk. They were also designed for learners to review what they learned in class and to practise the pattern of answering. To identify the effects of speaking activities by using the closed SNS, there were two tests-midterm test as a pretest and final test as a posttest- and the paired t-test was used to analyze the effect in the study. The first activity, describe a picture, was not only the relatively improved but also statistically meaningful. The second activity, respond to questions, scored lower in the final test than in the midterm test. Lastly the express an opinion activity was not statistically meaningful even though the score of the final test was improved. From the results of the study, it was revealed that speaking activities using the closed SNS had partially positive effects on TOEIC speaking class. That is, using Kakao Talk can be a possible and useful activity to teach speaking skills in English classroom.
