근대전환기 조선인의 세계기행과 극장 담론

국문 초록

1876년 고종이 국호를 개방하자 조선인들은 서구문물을 접하게 된다. 이전까지 중국 사행으로 한정적이던 국가 교류는 국호 개방과 더불어 서구문명인 철도의 발달로 인해 빠르게 확장된다. 조선에서 처음으로 서구문물을 접한 인물은 고종이 서구강국에 파견한 공사들이다. 이들은 외교활동 과정에서 서구의 근대 문명과 문물을 체험하게 되고 이전까지 경험하지 못했던 새로운 세계를 체험하게 된다. 본고에서는 그 중 극장이라는 공간에 주목하였다. 조선시대에도 연극이라는 장르는 존재했지만 탈춤처럼 유랑의 형식으로 공연되었다. 때문에 연극이나 오페라 등을 공연하기 위해 별도로 지어진 서구의 극장은 당시 조선인들의 눈길을 사로잡기 충분했고 이를 발전된 서구 문물의 하나로 인식했다. 유길준은 극장의 여가 기능에 주목했다. 그는 일하는 것만큼 쉬는 것도 중요하다고 생각했다. 육체와 정신이 균형을 잡아야 건강한 삶이라고 본 것이다. 때문에 서양인들이 여가를 보내는 극장을 묘사하고 기록하여 조선인들에게 쉬는 것은 부끄러운 일이 아닌 중요한 일이라는 점을 알리고 인식을 변화시키고자 했다. 민영환 일행의 서구 사행은 근대전환기에 이루어진 조선 최초의 세계여행이다. 당시 조선은 국상 중이라 민영환은 외교관으로서 사사로이 즐기는 일에는 갈 수 없다고 생각한다. 그럼에도 그는 참서관을 대신 보내어 공연에 대해 자세히 기록하게 한다. 이는 단순히 자신이 체험한 서구문물만을 기록한 것이 아닌 다양한 근대 선진문물을 수집하고 기록하기 위함이다. 김만수의 경우에는 연극에 대해서 사람들을 현혹시키는 이야기라며 부정적인 시각으로 바라보았다. 그럼에도 상세히 기록한 이유는 연극에 사용된 무대 장치 때문이다. 그는 옛 것보다 새로움을 추구하는 프랑스의 풍속에 대해 긍정적으로 평가했다. 이로 인해 프랑스는 새로운 발전이 가능하였고 근대화가 이루어진 것으로 보았다. 때문에 김만수는 프랑스의 새로운 기술 문명인 무대 장치에 관심을 갖고 기록한 것이다. 결국 이들의 시각은 각기 다르지만 극장을 통해 선진화된 예술, 문화 혹은 기술 문명을 조선에 알리고 계몽하고자 하는 공통적인 의도와 목적을 가지고 있었음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

National exchanges that had been previously limited to envoy traveling in China expanded rapidly due to the development of the Western civilized railway along with the opening of the nation (1876). The first persons to encounter western artifacts in Joseon were the ministers that Kojong dispatched to the Western powers. During their diplomatic activities, they experienced the Western civilization and culture and experienced a new world that they had never experienced before. they had experienced were left. Of them, this study focused on a space called a theater. In the Joseon era, there was a play genre, but it was performed in the form of wandering. So the Western theater, which was built separately to perform plays and operas, was enough to catch the eye of Joseon citizens at that time and recognized it as one of the advanced Western cultures. Joseon citizens who experienced theaters wanted to inform Joseon of Western civilization. Yu Gil‐jun paid attention to the leisure function of theater. He thought it was important to take as much rest as he was at work. He viewed that it is a healthy life that balances body and mind. Thus, by describing and recording the theater where Westerners spend their leisure time, he intended to inform Joseon citizens that resting is an important thing, not a shame to change the perception of Joseon citizens. Min Yeong‐hwan group’s western envoy traveling was the first world trip of Joseon that happened to the modern transition period. At the time, Joseon was in the middle of a state funeral, and Min Yeong‐hwan thought he could not go to a place for fun as a diplomat. Nevertheless, he sent a Chamseogwan officer on behalf of him to record the performance in detail. It was to collect and record various modern advanced artifacts, not merely recording the Western artifacts that they experienced. It can be seen that his intention to inform Joseon of modern artifacts and apply them further. In the case of Kim Man‐su, He had a negative attitude toward play, saying that it is only a fictional story that deceives people. He paid attention to the stage where the play was performed rather than the play in France, that is, the stage devices which are a new technical civilization. In the end, these views are different from one another, but it can be seen that through the theater.
