국문 초록

본 논문은 공감과 도덕의 공통분모로서 상상력을 상정한다. 인간의 상상은 공감을 위해 필요할 뿐만 아리나 공감에 기반한 행위를 실천하기 위한 도덕적인 상상의 차원에서도 필요하다. 공감의 범위가 무궁무진하기 때문에 우리는 도덕적인 상상력을 통해 그것의 보편타당한 것인지 검증해야 하는 것이다. 공감의 문제에 천착했던 두 러시아 작가 도스토예프스키와 톨스토이의 소설에 나타난 주인공의 공감의 문제는 우리에게 많은 점을 시사한다. 먼저 <<지하로부터의 수기>>의 주인공은 자기만족과 우월감을 확인하기 위해 공감적 상상력과 도덕적인 상상력이 결여된 환상을 펼치며 리자를 모욕한다. 한편 <<지주의 아침>>의 주인공 네흘류도프는 자신의 목적과 이상을 실현하기 위해 농민들의 삶을 개선하기 위해 노력하지만 그것은 공감을 기반으로 한 것이 아니었다. 즉 그에게는 공감적인 상상력이 부족했던 것이다. 하지만 주인공은 나중에 자신이 농민들과 하나가 되지 못하였음을 공감적 상상력의 부족에서 찾는다. 이처럼 공감은 단지 감정의 차원뿐만 아니라 도덕적인 차원에서도 보편타당함을 획득할 때 판단의 기준이 되고 실천의 동기가 될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper assumes imagination as a common denominator of sympathy and morality. Human imagination is necessary not only for sympathy but also for moral imagination to practice actions based on sympathy. Because the range of sympathy is infinite, we must verify that it is universally valid through moral imagination. The question of the sympathy of the protagonist in the novels of two Russian writers Dostoevsky and Tolstoy who stared at the issue of sympathy suggests many things to us. First, the protagonist of the Notes from the Underground insults Liza by unfolding a fantasy lacking sympathetic imagination and moral imagination to confirm self-gratification and superiority. On the other hand, the heroine of the Landowner s morning , Nekhliudov, tried to improve the lives of peasants in order to realize his goals and ideals, but it was not based on sympathy. In other words, he lacked sympathetic imagination. However, the main character later finds out that he is not one with the farmers because of lack of emotional imagination. As such, sympathy can become a criterion of judgment and an incentive to practice when acquiring universal relevance not only in the dimension of emotion but also in the moral dimension.
