아서왕 문학 국내 아동물의 번역과 출판 관행에 대한 비판적 검토

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 2000년부터 2017년까지 국내에서 출판된 아서왕 문학 아동번역물의 출간현황, 번역상의 특성들, 출판전반에 관한 문제들을 검토하고 분석해 보는 것이다. 검토 대상은 토마스 맬러리의 『아서왕의 죽음』, 이를 청소년용으로 번안한 토마스 불핀치의 작품, 별다른 개작 없이 축약한 제임스 놀스의 작품, 그리고 번역과 창작의 경계에 있어 보이는 외국작가들의 작품들에 대한 번역물을 포함한다. 해당 기간 동안 출판된 번역물의 총수는 36편인데 이 중에서 전집류가 26편이며 논술 관련 대비서의 형태로 출판된 도서들이 11편이다. 이는 2000년대에 있었던 대학입시의 논술 비중 강화와 관련이 있는 것으로 보인다. 아서왕 문학 국내 아동번역물에 나타난 번역 상의 가장 큰 문제는 맬러리와 불핀치 작품의 내용의 혼재이다. 즉 맬러리의 원전 내용 일부가 불핀치 작품의 번역서에 들어가 있거나 그 반대인 경우에 해당한다. 출판 관련한 문제로는 출판연감의 기록과 실제 출판 도서 정보가 다른 경우, 동일한 번역서가 세부 명칭만 바뀌어 여러 해에 걸쳐 다시 출판된 경우, 도서에 원작자가 잘못 표기되었거나 아예 누락된 사례들이 있다. 아동 독자를 대상으로 한 출판물인 만큼 번역 충실도를 위한 번역가들의 더욱 세심하고 주의 깊은 노력과 출판사와 출판 관계 기관들의 올바른 서지 정보의 제공 및 기존 출판 관행에 대한 인식 변화가 필요하다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to critically review and analyze the present state of publication, some characteristics of translation, and various problems concerning overall publication in Arthurian translations for children published between 2000 and 2017 in Korea. Target publications include translations of Thomas Malory’s Morte d’Arthur, Thomas Bulfinch’s The Age of Chivalry or, Legends of King Arthur which is the adaptation of Morte d’Arthur, James Knowles’s King Arthur and His Knights which is the pure contraction of Morte d’Arthur, and other foreign arthurs’ works which seem to be rather close to new creations. Totally thirty six translations for children were published in this period. Among these, twenty six were as a part of the complete(collected) world literary works for children and eleven of those twenty six books were to prepare for the essay writing test. This may be closely related to placing more weight to the essay writing test in the college entrance system in Korea in 2000s. The biggest problem found regarding to translation is stories of Malory and Bulfinch are mixed each other in one publication. Namely, some of Malory’s episodes are in the translation of Bulfinch’s work and vice versa. Concerning publishing practices, some cases such as the discordance in information between the Korean Publishing Almanac and published translations, continuous republishing of same translations with only tiny revisions, and a mistranscription/omission of a name of an author or a translator. In consideration that readers are very young children, it is very necessary to have translators’ careful efforts for more qualified translations in faithfulness, and bibliographic utilities and publishers’ shifts in perception and attitudes about existing publishing practices.
