국문 초록

현재 쌍계사는 경상남도 하동군 화개면에 위치하고 있다. 과거에는 이 곳을 화 개동천이라 불렀다. 조선조 유자들은 이 화개동천 어딘가에 그들의 이상향인 청학동이 있다고 믿었다. 그래서 조선조 유자의 청학동을 찾는 여정은 항상 쌍계사에서 시작되었다. 고려말 이인로 이후 숱한 이들이 청학동을 찾아 쌍계사에 왔고, 많은 사찰제영시를 남겼다. 그 사찰제영시 속에 그들이 찾고자 했던 이상향에 대한 인식이 투영되어 있다. 쌍계사 사찰제영시에 투영된 조선조 유자의 이상향의 특성은 크게 네 가지로 나타난다. 첫째, 조선조 유자의 이상향인 청학동은 실체가 없다. 그 어느 누구도 청학동은 이러저러한 모습이라는 기록을 남기지 않았다. 작품 역시 청학동을 형상화한 작품을 찾아보기 어렵다. 그래서 청학동에 신선이 사는지, 선녀가 사는지 알 수 없다. 청학동에 삼화주 나무가 존재하는지, 어떤 선과가 있는지, 선주는 있는지 심지어 불로장생의 공간인지 알 수 없다. 둘째, 실체는 보여주지 않으면서 동양의 대표적 이상향인 선계는 아니라고 이야기 한다. 쌍계사 사찰제영시에서는 조선조 유자들이 많이 생산해냈던 遊仙이 모티브가 되는 작품을 찾아보기 어렵다. 이것은 쌍계사를 찾았던 조선조 유자들은 그들의 이상향인 청학동을 상상적 공간으로 인식하지 않았던 것을 알 수 있게 해준다. 셋째, 지리산 쌍계사 사찰제영시에 투영된 이상향은 현실과의 단절된 공간이다. 조선조 유자들은 현실을 ‘苦’로 인식하였고, 이 ‘苦’가 없는 세상을 추구하였다. 현실 세계에서 추구하고자 한 요순시대가 결코 건설될 수 없다는 사실을 인식하였던 그들은 현실 밖에서 그러한 이상향을 추구하였다. 그들의 이상향은 공간적 측면에서 현실과의 단절 그 이상은 필요치 않았다. 넷째, 조선조 유자의 이상향은 시간적 측면에서 과거에 대한 동경으로 나타난다. 시간의 흐름 속에서 과거의 ‘苦’는 겪어버린 ‘苦’이고, 현실의 ‘苦’는 겪고 있는 ‘苦’이며, 미래의 ‘苦’는 겪어야 할 ‘苦’인 것이다. 그래서 쌍계사 사찰제영시에는 현재와 미래가 잘 드러나지 않는다. 조선조 유자에게 이상향은 ‘苦’가 없는 세상이었다.

영문 초록

Currently, Ssanggyesa is located in Hwagae-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do. In the past, it was called Hwagaedongcheon. Confucians of the Joseon Dynasty believed that there was Cheonghak- dong, which is the ideal of them, somewhere in the Hwagaedongcheon. So the journey to find the Cheonghak-dong of the Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty always started with Ssanggyesa. After Li In-lo of Late Goryeo Dynasty, many people came to Cheonghak-dong to find Cheonghak-dong and left many temple peotry (寺刹題詠詩). There is a perception of the utopia that they were looking for in the temple peotry. The characteristics of the ideal of the Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty projected on the Ssanggyesa temple peotry are four. First, Cheonghak-dong, the ideal of the Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty, has no reality. No one left a record that Cheong Hak- dong is such a thing. Literary works are also hard to find in the form of Cheonghakdong. So I do not know whether forerunner lives in Cheonghak-dong or celestial maiden lives. It is not known whether there is Samwhaju tree in Cheonghak-dong, what good fruit is, good liquor is even a space of perpetual youth and longevity. Second, it does not show reality but tells that it is not Sun-gye which is the representative ideal of Orient. In Ssanggyesa temple peotry, it is hard to find works that U-Sun, which has been produced by Confucian scholars, is a motif. This makes it possible for the Confucian scholars who had searched for Ssanggyesa to know that they did not perceive the ideal of Cheonghakdong as their imaginary space. Third, the utopia projected on the temple peotry of Ssanggyesa in Mt. jiri is a disconnected space from reality. Confucian scholars of the Joseon dynasty recognized reality as ‘Go(苦)’ and pursued a world without ‘Go’. Recognizing the fact that the Yosun period, which they wanted to pursue in the real world, could never be built, they sought such an ideal outside of reality. Their ideals did not need more than a break with reality in space. Fourth, the ideal of the Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty appears as a longing for the past in terms of time. In the course of time, ‘Go’ in the past is ‘Go’, ‘Go’ in reality is ‘Go’, and ‘Go’ in the future is ‘Go’. So the present and future are not revealed in the temple peoples of Ssanggyesa in Mt. jiri. The world without the ‘Go’ to Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty was ideal.
