소설 『재즈』의 음악 세계 추론

국문 초록

토니 모리슨은 『재즈』에서 소설의 구조가 곧 의미가 되기를, 즉 ‘즉흥성과 독창 성, 변화’ 자체가 되기를 원하면서 그 실현의 해답을 재즈라는 음악 형식에서 찾았다. 여기서 재즈는 여러 화자의 즉흥 연주와 자유 변주이기 때문에 실현 가능성을 높였다. 이 논문은 재즈 기법을 중심으로 소설의 음악 세계(음악적 형식과 문학적 내용의 상호 관계)를 추론하였다. 이때 바흐친의 대화주의와 카니발 이론에 기대어 소설 속 다성성과 즉흥성의 의미를 새기면서 민중 언어(음악과 이야기)의 역동적인 상호 교류와 의사소통 행위를 파악하였다. 『재즈』에서 화자와 등장인물은 서술자이고 피화자이다. 독자도 내포독자로서, 제3의 피화자로서, 반복 독서를 통하여 재즈 연주에 그루브를 타면서 추임새를 넣을 수 있다. 모두 자유 의지로 ‘음악하기=이야기하기’에 참여하므로, 서사 텍스트는 다양한 의미 작용의 유희를 발생하고, 또 마음속의 흔적을 남긴다. 그러나 자유 의지가 새로운 의미를 부여하더라도 다성성(대화주의)과 즉흥성(카니발화)의 이항 대립을 통하여 다의多義를 하나로 모으는 데는 어려움이 따른다.

영문 초록

In her novel Jazz , Toni Morrison applied the musical form of jazz so that the novel’s structure per se would convey the meaning of the novel, i.e., improvisation, originality and change. Such attempt was made because jazz is comprised of the improvisation and variation of multiple narrators. This research paper contains the systematic inferences about the musical world realized in Morrison s novel (i.e., the interrelation between musical form and literary contents) with a focus on jazz techniques employed in a metalinguistic way. In particular, this research paper analyzes the polyphony and improvisation embodied in the novel and the dynamic interaction and communication of common language (music and narrative) based on Mikhail Bakhtins theories of dialogism and carnival. In Jazz , a narrator and a character serve as a speaker and a narratee, respectively. A reader can also get into the jazz groove and provide a rejoinder through repeated reading as an implied reader or a third narratee. Since all individuals participate in music performance and story telling at their free will, a narrative text creates various meanings and enjoyment and leaves a trace on mind. Granted, free will generates a new meaning. However, there are difficulties in combining multiple meanings into one through a binary opposition between polyphony (dialogism) and improvisation (carnivalesque).
