융합형 현실체감 EXALL 콘텐츠의 영어교육 효과

국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 IT와 언어의 융합인 현실체감형 EXALL(Experiential Awareness Language Learning) 어플리케이션의 영어교육에 대한 효과성을 연구하는 데 있다. 융합형 현실체감 EXALL(Experiential Awareness Language Learning) 앱 콘텐츠는 기존의 언어학습인 가상 체험(virtual experience)과 달리 실제 상황(real situation)을 인식하는 IT 기술로 현실체감(experiential awareness)형 콘텐츠 즉 학습자가 처한 상황에 맞는 콘텐츠를 앱을 통하여 제공한다. 영어 관련 과목의 학습자 129명이 본 실험에 참가하였으며, 그들 중 55명은 4주간 EXALL앱을 활용하여 영어학습을 하도록 하고, 나머지 74명은 EXALL앱과 동일한 어휘를 포함한 북클릿으로 학습하도록 하였다. 두 집단 모두 사전시험과 사후시험을 본 후 그 점수의 향상 정도를 비교하였다. 또한, 이 두 집단에게 설문지를 시행하여 EXALL 콘텐츠에 대한 이들의 인식과 태도에 대해서 알아보았다. 그 결과 첫째, EXALL앱을 활용한 집단이 북클릿집단보다 단기간에 더 높은 점수의 향상도를 보였고, 둘째, EXALL앱은 기존의 교재를 활용한 영어학습을 대체하지는 않지만 교재 활용 영어학습을 보충하는데 매우 효과적임을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 참가자들은 EXALL앱을 활용한 영어학습에 전반적으로 만족도를 보였다. EXALL앱의 개선점으로는 기술적인 부분과 콘텐츠에 대한 점을 제시하였다. 결론적으로 EXALL앱을 활용한 영어학습은 기존의 교재를 활용한 학습보다 적은 시간을 들여도 유사한 성적 향상을 보이는 효율적인 도구임을 알 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of the experiential awareness EXALL (Experiential Awareness Language Learning) Application which is a convergent program of language with the IT technology on English learning. The EXALL program provides the English content that is experiential awareness appropriate for the learner s situations by means of the technologies that recognize their real-life situations. It is different from the current language learning programs that are equipped with virtual experience. In the study, 129 Korean college students who were taking an English course participated in the experiment. The students were divided into two groups: 55 for the experiment group and 74 for the control group. The experiment group was asked to study English using EXALL contents for four weeks while the control group was asked to study English using a booklet that contained the same vocabulary as the content of the EXALL App. Both groups took the pre- and post-tests at the same time. Their scores were analyzed to compare their score improvement. They were also asked to answer a post-survey to examine their perceptions and attitudes toward the use of the EXALL program. The findings of the study indicated that firstly, the EXALL App users showed an improvement in score similar to the booklet users during the short time of the experiment. Secondly, the use of the EXALL App was effective in supplementing English learning although it can not replace the English learning books. Thirdly, the participants showed general satisfaction with the EXALL App. Some suggestions were given to revise the EXALL App in terms of its technologies and content. In conclusion, English learning with the EXALL App would be an efficient English learning tool since it resulted in similar score improvement when compared with the use of current English learning textbooks.
