국문 초록

신분제 사회인 조선에서 사대부를 제외한 사람들에게 균등한 교육의 기회는 주어지지 않았다. 박죽서는 서녀로 태어났으나 차별받지 않은 가정 분위기에서 교육 받을 기회를 얻었고, 타고난 영특함으로 학문을 완성해 갔던 것 같다. 서녀로 태어나 소실로 살았던 30여 년의 생애 동안 166편의 한시를 남겼다. 166편의 한시 작품은 남편의 친척인 서돈보에 의해 『죽서집』으로 묶여 간행되었고, 이 시집에 쓰인 서문과 한시를 통해 죽서가 당대 남성 문인에게도 인정받았음을 엿볼 수 있다. 박죽서 한시의 특징은 첫째 그리움이다. 남편의 부임지를 따라 옮겨 다닌 한양과 강서현 등에서 고향인 원주와 함께 자란 형제에 대한 그리움, 지척에 두고도 찾지 않는 남편에 대한 그리움, 친구에 대한 그리움을 소박하지만 진솔하게 표현하였다. 여성적 필체로 간절하고 절실하게 그리움을 표현하고 있으나, 애상적 정서에 매몰되지 않고 절제하는 면모를 보이고 있다. 두 번째는 사대부들의 시에서 일반적으로 나타나는 유가적 기풍의 자기 성찰과 현재의 삶에 대한 자족적 생활태도를 죽서의 한시에서도 찾아 볼 수 있다. 셋째는 한시 창작에 대한 열망이다. 상당수의 작품에서 죽서는 한시 창작에 대한 어려움과 더 나은 작품을 짓고자 하는 열망 그리고 이러한 시세계를 함께 이야기 나눌 知音에 대한 간절함으로 표현하고 있다. 죽서에게 있어 한시 창작은 實存의 확인과정이었던 듯하다. 이러한 노력이 있었기에 19세기 최초의 女性詩社인 삼호정시사에 참여할 수 있었을 것이다. 죽서의 한시 창작은 신분에 좌절하지 않고 자신만의 시세계를 여성적 필체로 소박하고 진솔하게 표현한 점과 조선후기 문학담당층의 확대라는 점에서 의미가 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

During the Joseon dynasty, when a rigid class system was in operation, education was only available to sadaebus. Park Jook-Seo, though born an illegitimate child, grasped an opportunity for education in an unusually egalitarian household, and thrived acaedmically by means of her own intelligence. Born illegitimate, living as a concubine for thirty years, Jook-Seo left 166 works of Sino-Korean poetry. The 166 pieces of poetry were collected and published as 『Jukseojip』 by her husband s relative Seo Don-Bo, and from the preface and the poetry in this book, it shows that Jook-Seo was acknowledged by her male peers. The most distinct theme of Park Jook-Seo’s Sino-Korean poetry is longing. As she moved to Hanyang and Kangseohyeon, following her husband’s posts, her longing for her hometown Wonju, her siblings, and friends is expressed in a simple yet honest manner. Even though her feminine style expresses longing in an earnest and desperate manner, it shows restraint, rather than being consumed by grief. The Confucian self-reflection and the self-sufficient modus vivendi, commonly found in the poetry of sadaebus, can also be found in the Jook-Seo’s poetry. The desire to create Sino-Korean poetry is also a prominent theme. In many poems, Jook-Seo expresses the difficulties she faces in writing poetry, along with the desire to create better works of art, and a deep longing for a friend to share her poetic vision with. It seems that to Jook-Seo, poetry was a confirmation of her own existence. This is what made her participation in the Samhojeong poetry circle possible, the first female poetry circle of the 19th century. Jook-seo’s poetry is meaningful in that she, through her feminine style of writing, brought fruition to her poetic vision in a simple yet earnest manner, despite her class, and in that she shows how the literary figures in the late Joseon dynasty were diversifying.
