비푸 스리빌라사(Vipoo Srivilasa)의 작품에 관한 연구

국문 초록

현대 사회는 모더니즘 붕괴와 포스트모더니즘의 부상으로 차이와 다원화에 대한 담론이 활성화되었다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 혼종성(混種性)과 타자성(他者性)을 강조하는 포스트식민주의가 등장하여 제3세계 작가들과 성적 소수자를 표현한 작가들의 미술계 진입을 용이하게 했다. 이러한 미술계의 흐름에서 현대도예를 볼 때, 비푸 스리빌라사(Vipoo Srivilasa)의 작품은 혼종성을 기반으로 이주민의 정체성, 동성애, 환경 등의 사회문제를 드로잉과 키치적 형태를 빌어 유머 있게 풀어냈다는 점에서 주목받을 만하다. 그는 백토를 이용해 불상을 모티프로 인간 또는 동물의 형상을 본뜬 키치적 성격의 피규어를 제작하고 작품의 표면에는 청화 안료로 다양한 패턴을 그려 넣거나 식물 모양의 유니트로 장식을 한다. 그는 이러한 키치적 형태를 통해 관람자들이 작품의 주제에 쉽게 접근하도록 한다. 또한, 개인의 정체성 문제에서 나아가 문화 정체성에 관심을 가지며 세계화, 정보화, 다원화라는 시대의 흐름에 따라 예술을 매개로 세계 각지의 사람들과 소통하고 있다. 이로써 비푸 스리빌라사는 예술을 통해 자신의 삶을 표현하고 다양한 사람들과 이를 향유하므로 현대도예에 예술의 사회적 기능과 효과적인 소통방법을 제시하고 있다.

영문 초록

In modern society, the discourse of difference and diversification is activated by the collapse of modernism and the rise of postmodernism. With the appearance of post-colonialism emphasizing the hybridity and otherness, it became easier for the third world artists and the artists expressing the sexual minorities to enter the art world. Looking at modern pottery in this tendency, the works by Vipoo Srivilasa are worth noticing in the aspect of humorously expressing the social problems such as the identity of immigrants, homosexuality, and environment based on the hybridity in the kitschy form and drawing. He produces a kitschy figure taking after a form of human or animal with the motif of Buddha statue using the white clay, and then draws diverse patterns with blue paints on the surface of the work, or decorates it with a plant-shaped unit. His kitsch shapes allow the viewers to approach the themes of his works more easily. Furthermore, the themes of his works range from individual identity problem to cultural identity issues, which shows that Srivilasa intends to communicate with people around the world in the time of globalization, information and diversification. As Vipoo Srivilasa is expressing his own life through art and also enjoying this with diverse people, he is suggesting the social function and effective communication methods of art to modern pottery.
