삶과 죽음의 모티브의 조형화 사례 연구

국문 초록

시대에 따라 삶과 죽음에 관한 연구는 생물학적 입장만이 아닌 사회적으로 종교, 문학, 그리고 예술 등 여러 분야에서 다양하게 진행되어왔다. 그 중 예술작품에서 다루는 죽음은 삶과의 연관성 속에서만 묘사하거나 그에 대한 사유나 타인의 죽음을 경험한 바에 따라 사실적으로 기록하기도 하고 은유와 상징 등으로 변용된 이미지로 표현되어왔다. 본 논문은 삶과 죽음의 순환관계를 시공간적 이미지로 구현해온 비올라의 비디오 작업을 통해 첨단 과학과 의학의 발달에 따라 수명연장이 가속화되는 현대에서는 삶과 죽음이라는 모티브를 어떠한 방식으로 조형화하고 있는지를 고찰하였다. 우선 예술에 나타난 삶과 죽음의 모티브가 비단 한 작가의 주제가 아닌 예술에 나타나는 보편적 모티브임을 전제하기 위해 문학과 현대미술에서 다뤄진 삶과 죽음에 다양한 접근방식에 대해 살펴보았다. 그리고 다음과 같은 순서를 따라 비올라의 작업을 논의하였다. 먼저 서구인으로서 현대매체인 비디오를 이용하면서도 동양의 불교를 비롯한 다양한 종교로부터 기독교까지 아우르는 비올라의 사상적 배경을 알아보았다. 이것은 비올라 작업의 몇 가지 핵심 요소들을 파악하고 생사관의 표출로 나타나는 방식을 이해하기 위해 필수적인 기초 단계로 사료되었다. 따라서 우선 몇 작품의 예시를 통해 그 내용을 알아본 뒤에 사상적 배경을 역 추적하는 방식으로 기술하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 비디오라는 매체가 갖는 시공간적 무한성을 어떻게 다루고 있는지 살펴보았다. 그리고 마지막으로 물과 불이라는 자연 요소를 이용하여 생사의 순환 고리를 표현하는 그의 작업의 의미를 규명함으로써 비올라가 삶과 죽음에 대한 사유와 믿음을 어떤 입장과 세계관을 통해 작업에 표출하는지 고찰해 보았다.

영문 초록

Studies on life and death have been carried out in various fields such as religion, literature, and arts, not only biological aspects. Deaths dealt with in works of art have been expressed in images that have been recorded realistically, metaphorically, and symbolically as they have been depicted only in relation to life, experiences of them, and deaths of others. In this paper, we examine how Viola s video work, which has embodied the cyclical relationship between life and death, shapes the motives of life and death in the modern age where life extension is accelerated by the development of advanced science and medicine. I first examined various approaches to life and death in literature and contemporary art in order to presume that the motif of life and death in art is a universal motif that appears in art rather than the subject of a certain one. Then I discussed the work of the viola in the following order. First, I examined how he used a modern medium video with the ideological background that came from various religions including Christianity to Asian Buddhism. This was considered an essential step to understand some of the key elements of the viola work and to understand the way in which it appears as an expression of life and death. Therefore, I first described some of the works through an example, and then described the method of backtracking the ideological background. And through them, I investigate how video media has its temporal infinity. Finally, by examining the meaning of his work expressing the circulation loop of life and death by using the natural elements of water and fire, I examined how Viola expresses the thoughts and beliefs about life and death through his work and world view.
