국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 사회과 환경교육이 지속가능성 개념에 기반한 시민성 교육으로 재정의되어야 함을 제안하고, 이를 실현할 수 있는 구체적 수업 구성 전략을 제시하 는 데에 있다. 이를 위하여 현재 환경교육에서 주요 키워드로 다루어지고 있는 지속 가능성 개념을 기준으로 현행 사회과 교육과정과 교과서를 분석하였다. 현행 교과서에서는 지속가능성의 의미를 환경 관련 개념으로만 협소하게 활용하고, 개념만 단순히 설명하고 있으며, 학교급별 내용 서술 수준의 차이도 고려하지 않는 한계를 보였다. 따라서, 문제해결 능력을 갖춘 시민적 자질 함양교육으로서의 환경교육을 실천하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 변화가 필요하다. 첫째, 환경에 ‘관한’ 교육에서 벗어나 생태시민성 육성을 목표로 하는 환경교육이 이루어져야 한다. 둘째, 사회문제를 중심으로 다양한 영역의 지식, 정보, 기능을 활용하는 통합형 수업을 지향해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 수업을 실현할 수 있는 구체적 아이디어를 제안하였으며 이를 통해 학습자는 인간, 자연, 생태의 바람직한 관계 인식에 필요한 생태적 환경관을 습득하고, 환경문제를 사회구조적 관점에서 비판적으로 분석할 수 있으며, 합리적이면서도 정의로운 의사결정과정을 통해 환경 문제해결에 참여할 수 있는 자질을 습득해 나갈 것이다.

영문 초록

The aim of this study is to argue that the environmental education in Social Studies should be redefined as the citizenship education focusing on the sustainability and to provide the teaching strategies for realizing this citizenship education. This study reviewed the meaning of sustainability, and analyzed the Social Studies textbooks and curriculum. The problems are as in the following. Firstly, the meaning of sustainability is narrowly used only as environmental concept. Secondly, there are too many descriptions explaining the sustainability as a concept. Thirdly, there is no difference in describing the sustainability according to the school level. The environmental education in modern society should be able to cultivate the citizens capable of solving the environmental problems and it needs to reflect the meaning of sustainability actively. Newly constructed environmental education based on the study results has the characteristics as in the following. Firstly, it aims to cultivate the ecological citizenship. Secondly, it constructs the classes focusing on the social problems and it pursues the integrated classes using the knowledges, informations and functions in various academic fields. Through this environmental education, the learners can acquire the ecological views about the environment and analyze the social problems in terms of social structure. Also, the learners will participate in solving the environmental problems with their rational, righteous and balanced decision making.
