국문 초록

당대에 높은 지위에 오른 고구려 유민은 여러 명이 있었지만, 왕모중만큼 권력의 핵심부에 진입하여 실권을 행사한 인물은 없다. 이는 그가 현종(이융기)의 최측근 호위무사로 있다가 현종이 일으킨 두 차례의 궁중정변에서 큰 공을 세웠기 때문에 가능하였다. 이후 그는 정변에서 결정적 역할을 수행한 북아금군과의 밀접한 관계를 바탕으로 최고 실세로 부상하니 諸王과 환관들도 두려워하게 되었다. 하지만 왕모중은 권력의 정점에서 초심을 잃고 점차 교만해졌다. 그 틈을 이용하여 환관들이 반격에 나섰고 마침내 왕모중이 권력 다툼에서 패해 주살되었다. 현종의 1차 정변에는 왕모중 이외에 북아금군 계열에 속한 5인의 고구려 유민이 참여하였고 그 중 몇 명은 2차 정변에도 참가한 것이 새로 출토된 墓誌銘에 보인다. 이는 기록에는 보이지 않지만 더 많은 고구려 유민이 북아금군에 속해 있었을 가능성을 시사한다. 왕모중은 그들 고구려 유민과 유대의식을 가지고 서로 협력하였을 가능성이 있다고 생각된다.

영문 초록

Among the Goguryeo diaspora who rose to high positions during the Tang Dynasty, no one entered the core of power and wielded real authority like Wang Maozhong. This was possible because he served as Xuanzong(Li Longji)’s closest bodyguard and made significant contributions during the two coups led by Xuanzong. Subsequently, he rose to become the most powerful figure based on his influence over the Northern Command, which played a decisive role in the coups, to the point where even members of the royal family and eunuchs feared him. However, at the height of his power, Wang Maozhong gradually became arrogant. Seizing this opportunity, the eunuchs launched a counterattack, and Wang Maozhong ultimately lost the power struggle and was executed. In addition to Wang Maozhong, five members of the Goguryeo diaspora from the Northern Command participated in Xuanzong’s first coup. Newly excavated tomb epitaphs reveal that some of them also took part in the second coup. This suggests the possibility that more Goguryeo diaspora members were part of the Northern Command, even though they do not appear in the records. It is reasonable to assume that Wang Maozhong maintained a sense of solidarity with these Goguryeo diaspora members and cooperated with them.
