국문 초록

제2차 세계대전 후, 유엔이 세계인권선언을 채택함에 따라 각국 국민은 헌법에 의해 종교 신앙의 자유를 보장 받게 되었다. 아시아에서는 기독교가 전혀 이질적인 존재가 아니게 되었고, 각국의 종교 생활과 문화 속에서 꽃피우게 되었다. 그에 따라 기독교 문학도 전쟁 전과 비교하여 변모하였고, 많은 기독교 작가를 배출하여 본격적으로 기독교 사상을 가지고 실존의 근원적인 문제에 맞서게 되었다. 1970년대에 기독교 신학의 문맥화라는 개념의 제기는 서구의 “정통성”을 깨고 지역 신학의 주체성을 높이는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 그에 동조하는 전후의 기독교 문학은 전쟁 전과 비교하여 보다 주체성을 띠는 경향이 있다. 엔도 슈사쿠의 『침묵』과 김은국의 『순교자』는 전후, 존재론적인 각도에서 자국의 독특한 역사에 메스를 댄 기독교 문학의 대표작이다. 『순교자』는 1964년에 영어로 미국에 출판되었고, 『침묵』은 1966년에 일본어로 일본에 출판되었으나, 극한적인 생존 환경에서의 신 부재의 문제, 신에 대한 신앙에 흔들린 사람들의 심리와 행위를 그려내고, 목사의 자기 희생을 찬양하는 데서 일치하고 있다. 그뿐만 아니라, 함께 성서와의 상호 텍스트성을 가지고 있으며, 십자가에 처형되기 전날 밤의 예수나, 욥기 등의 성서 이야기의 인용에 있어서 공통점을 가지고 있다. 한편, 이야기의 패턴이 거의 동일함에도 불구하고, 두 작품의 테마는 다르다. 『침묵』은 주로 일본에서의 기독교의 토착화 문제에 초점을 맞추고 있지만, 『순교자』는 목사와 군인의 휴머니즘적인 신앙을 논하고 있다. 두 작품이 다른 과제에 주목한 것은 작가의 개인 경험과 깊은 관련이 있지만, 역사적 요인의 차이도 무시할 수 없는 것이다. 기독교 문학의 비교 연구를 통해 각 지역의 역사 문화의 이질성을 구별하는 또 하나의 시점을 제공할 수 있으며, 다른 문맥에서의 기독교 문화에 대한 재해석의 방식을 명확히 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

After World War II, the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations ensured that the freedom of religious belief was guaranteed by the constitutions of various countries. Consequently, Christianity was no longer seen as a complete outsider in Asia and began to flourish within the religious lives and cultures of these nations. Along with this, Christian literature underwent a transformation from its pre-war state, producing many Christian writers who seriously confronted fundamental existential issues through Christian thought. The concept of contextualizing Christian theology, proposed in the 1970s, aimed to break the “orthodoxy” of the West and increase the autonomy of regional theologies. In line with this, post-war Christian literature showed a tendency to possess more subjectivity compared to pre-war literature. Shusaku Endo's “Silence” and Richard E. Kim's “The Martyred” are representative works of post-war Christian literature that delve into their respective countries' unique histories from an existential perspective. “The Martyred” was published in English in America in 1964, and “Silence” was published in Japanese in Japan in 1966. Both works explore the problem of God's absence in extreme survival conditions and depict the psychology and actions of people swayed by their faith in God, celebrating the self-sacrifice of pastors. Additionally, both works share intertextuality with the Bible, drawing commonalities in their references to biblical stories such as Jesus on the night before his crucifixion and the Book of Job. However, despite the similarities in their narrative patterns, the themes of the two works differ. “Silence” focuses primarily on the issue of the indigenization of Christianity in Japan, while “The Martyred” discusses the humanistic faith of pastors and soldiers. The differing focuses of the two works are deeply connected to the personal experiences of the authors, but the differences in historical factors cannot be ignored. Comparative studies of Christian literature can provide another perspective to discern the heterogeneity of historical cultures in different regions and clarify the ways in which Christian culture is reinterpreted in different contexts.
