라프카디오 헌과 일본환상의 횡단: 종교환상 가로지르기

국문 초록

본고의 목적은 14년간 메이지(明治)시대 일본에 거주하면서 총 14권에 이르는 일본 관련 영문저서와 방대한 분량의 서간문을 통해 서구 세계에 널리 ‘환상적인 일본’ 이미지를 퍼뜨린 그리스=아일랜드계 영국인 저널리스트 라프카디오 헌(Lafcadio Hearn, 1850-1904), 일본명 고이즈미 야쿠모(小泉八雲)의 일본담론에 대해 ‘환상’이라는 개념을 매개로 분석하는 데에 있다. 이때 특히 『미지의 일본 견문기』(1894), 『동국에서』(1895), 『마음: 일본인의 내면생활의 암시와 반향』(1896), 『불국토의 낙수』(1897), 『일본: 해석을 위한 시론』(1904) 등의 저작 및 그의 여자친구 비스랜드 여사가 편집한 『라프카디오 헌의 생애와 서간문1/2』(1906)과 『라프카디오 헌의 일본 서간집』(1901)에 주목할 것이다. 라프카디오 헌에게는 흔히 “일본인보다 더 일본을 사랑한 외국인”이라는 수식어가 따라다니는데, 본고는 이것을 ‘라프카디오 헌이라는 환상’으로 간주한다. 가령 라프카디오 헌은 1893년 11월에 니시다 센타로에게 보낸 편지에서 “나는 날이 가면 갈수록 일본인을 정말 알 수 없다는 생각이 든다.”고 적고 있는가 하면, 다음 해인 1894년 11월3일자로 챔벌레인에게 보낸 편지에서는 매우 노골적으로 일본인에 대한 혐오감을 토로하기도 했다. 사실 라프카디오 헌과 그의 일본담론만큼 환상이라는 키워드에 잘 어울리는 사례를 찾아보기란 쉽지 않을 것이다. 따라서 ‘환상’과 ‘환상의 횡단’ 개념을 중심으로 ‘대상a’, ‘상상계’, ‘상징계’, ‘실재계’ 등과 같은 라캉 정신분석학의 주요 개념들을 매개로 라프카디오 헌의 일본담론 문헌들을 해석할 필요가 있다. 이처럼 라캉 정신분석학의 관점에서 라프카디오 헌의 일본담론에 접근하는 것은 아마도 국내외적으로 최초의 시도라고 생각된다. 이와 더불어 본고는 선행연구들과 달리 특히 종교 문제에 주목하고 있다. 그리하여 가령 라프카디오 헌이 강조한 일본종교의 기원으로서의 조상숭배를 비롯하여 ‘없음의 종교’로 규정된 신도(神道, 신토) 및 사라지고 말 종교로서 차정된 일본불교 등에 대해 환상의 관점에서 새로운 해석을 시도하고 있다. 요컨대 본고는 헌의 ‘종교로 일본읽기’를 따라가는 한편 이와 동시에 그에게서 ‘종교로서의 일본’이라는 이상을 벗겨냄으로써 가능한 한 있는 그대로의 일본을 들여다보기 위한 준비작업이 될 것이다. 그 결과 헌의 일본담론에 내포된 이중적 환상구조와 그 의미를 확인하는 데에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to analyze, paying a special attention to the notion of “fantasy”, the discourses on Japan by an English writer Lafcadio Hearn(1850-1904), Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo(小泉八雲), who played a very important role in introducing “fantastic image of Japan” widely to the westerners through his 14 books on Japan and great voluminous letters written in English during his stay in Japan from 1890 until death. In so doing, I will pay special attention to not only Hearn’s works such as Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan(1894), Out of the East(1895), Kokoro: Hints and Echoes of Japanese Inner Life(1896), Gleanings in Buddha-Fields(1897), Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation(1904), but also The Life and Letters of Lafcadio Hearn1/2(1906) and The Japanese Letters of Lafcadio Hearn(1910) edited by his girlfriend Elizabeth Bisland. Lafcadio Hearn has been often said to be “a foreigner who was able to deeply understand Japan far more than Japanese people themselves”. However, this paper considers it as a fantasy. For example, he writes “Everyday, it strikes me more and more how little I shall ever know of the Japanese.” in a letter to Nishida Sentaro in November 1893. Moreover, he even confessed his own repugnance against Japanese in a letter to B.H. Chamberlain in November 1894. In fact, Lafcadio Hearn and his discourses on Japan go very well with the key word “fantasy”. So we need to analyze them especially by the Lacanian notion such as “fantasy”, “traversing the fantasy”, “objet petit a”, “the imaginary”, “the symbolic”, “the real” and so on. It might be the first attempt to approach the discourses on Japan by Lafcadio Hearn from the perspective of Lacanian psychoanalysis. Additionally, I will also focus on the issue of religion such as ancestor-worship as the origin of Japanese religion, Shintoism as the religion of immateriality, and Japanese Buddhism as a future of fantasy. In sum, this paper will prepare the way for understanding Japan as unfeignedly as possible, both following Hearn’s reading Japan chiefly in association with religion and removing the ideal fantasy of “Japan as a religion” from him as well.
