경남 서부지역 전설의 전승양상과 지리·문화적 특성 연구 - 산청, 하동, 남해 지역 광포전설을 대상으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 경남 서부에 나란히 자리한 산청, 하동, 남해 지역에서 전승되는 광포전설의 특징을 살피고 그것이 지역의 지리·문화적 환경과 어떤 상호관련성을 갖는지 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 세 지역 광포전설의 존재 양상을 확인하고 세 지역에서 두루 확인되면서 자료 수가 풍부한 유형을 논의대상으로 선정하였다. 대표로 선정된 광포전설의 하위유형은 산 이동 전설과 장자 못 전설, 아기장수 전설, 오누이 힘내기 전설이다. 네 유형의 광포전설을 중심으로 세 지역 자료를 견주고 지역별 차이와 특성을 살펴보았다. 그런 다음, 각 지역 광포전설과 각 지역의 지리·문화적 특성의 상호관련성을 파악하였다. 그 결과, 산청의 광포전설에 나타난 지역적 변이는 산간의 지형·지리적 특수성과 유교·양반 지향의 보수성이라는 산청의 지역적 특성과 관련되어 있으며 하동의 광포전설에 나타난 지역적 변이는 산지와 내륙, 도서로 구성된 다양한 지리환경적 특수성과 농경문화적 공동체성, 탈중세 지향성이라는 하동의 지역적 특성과 관련되어 있는 것으로 보았다. 남해의 광포전설에 나타난 지역적 변이는 해안·도서의 지리적 특수성과 어업전진기지로서의 특수성, 남성중심의 가부장성이라는 남해의 지역적 특성과 관련됨을 확인하였다. 전설이 무엇을 반영하고 있는가 하는 문제와 무엇이 전설을 그렇게 존재하도록 하였는가 하는 문제를 해결하기 위한 열쇠는 전설이 전승되는 지역의 지리, 문화의 특성을 주목하는 데 있다. 본 연구는 세 지역의 광포 전설에 주목하여 지역의 문화적 전통과 지역성을 살펴본 연구로서 경남학의 일부로 학문적으로 기여할 수 있는 부분이 있을 것으로 생각된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of Gwangpo legend that has been handed down in the regions of Sancheong, Hadong, and Namhae, which are located side by side in western Gyeongsangnam-do, and to find out its interrelations with local geographical and cultural environment. For this, first, data of the three regions about moving mountain legend, eldest son pond legend, baby general legend, brother and sister’s power competition legend, among subtypes of Gwangpo legend, were compared to examine local differences and characteristics. Then, the interrelations between the Gwangpo legend of each region and the geographical and cultural characteristics of each region were identified. As a result, it appeared that local modification shown in Gwangpo legend of Sancheong is associated with the topographical and geographical peculiarities of its mountain region and the Sancheong’s regionality of conservatism oriented towards Confucianism and yangban, and that local modification shown in Gwangpo legend of Hadong is associated with various peculiarities of its geographical environment, which comprises mountains, inland areas and islands, and with Hadong’s regionality of agricultural culture community and orientation towards de-medievality. Local modification shown in Gwangpo legend of Namhae was found to be associated with the geographical peculiarities of its coastal and insular areas, its peculiarity as a fishery forward base, and Namehae’s regionality of androcentric patriarchy. The key to solving the problem of what a legend reflects and the problem of what made a legend exist as such lies in paying attention to the characteristics of geography and culture in a region where the legend has been handed down. This study examined the local cultural tradition and regionality of the three regions, paying attention to their Gwangpo legends, and it is deemed that this study will be able to contribute academically as part of Gyeongnam Studies.
