『世說新語』의 언어를 통해 본 사회 현상 및 그 의미

국문 초록

『세설신어』는 東漢 말기부터 東晉 말기까지 실존했던 인물들의 일화를 담아 문학사적으로 ‘세설체 문학’의 비조라는 지위를 얻었을 뿐만 아니라, 正史에 기록되지 않은 소소한 내용도 담고 있어 중요한 사료로서의 가치도 지니고 있다. 본고에서는 작품 속에 구사된 언어들에 주목한다. 왜냐하면 그러한 언어들은 그 시대를 살았던 사람들의 사고나 문화 등을 파악할 수 있는 유의미한 자료이기 때문이다. 본문에서는 『세설신어』에 수록된 일화 가운데 특히 당시 사람들의 언어 행태와 관련된 ‘險談’, ‘能言’, ‘典故’를 중심으로 시대상과 가치관을 조명한다. 그러한 언어적 특징은 하나의 전통과 기준이 되어 현재에도 그 영향력을 발휘하고 있다. 따라서 본고에서의 고찰은 단순한 언어를 통한 위진 시기의 사회 현상 및 의미를 파악하는 것일 뿐만 아니라, 우리의 현재를 이해할 수 있는 발판을 마련하는 것이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

The Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties was one of the most chaotic periods in Chinese history, but it also produced the most diverse cultural phenomena. Shih-Shuo Hsin-Yu(世說新語) reflects the characteristics of the literati of the time, such as the Scholars scorn each other, Character evaluation, Look up to the past and look down on the present, Metaphysical idle talk. The rude words, eloquent words, and euphemisms discussed in this essay are both the characteristics and the ills of intellectuals. Despite prevalence of literary criticism and character evaluation, it was not right to criticize or gossip about others, and even in the midst of the metaphysical idle talk, we can see that eloquent words alone are not true eloquence, but rather a value that must be accompanied by actions and character. The tradition of ‘Look up to the past and look down on the present’, which naturally became the language of the intellectuals, could express the intellect and dignity of the speaker, and this tradition of the Look up to the past and look down on the present’, in particular, has become a distinctive feature of the Chinese people's search for identity in the classics. Shih-Shuo Hsin-Yu values inherent in them, such as not gossiping and not letting words run wild, are still valued even in the current era of AI ethics.
