국문 초록

本研究は、西欧のアジア侵略に対する危機意識の中でなされた、朝鮮の近代化推進と日本の朝鮮進出過程を日本の対朝鮮教育事業と関連して検討した。特に、朝鮮の改革と近代化過程における日本の役割を、福沢諭吉と岡倉由三郎の教育事業、あるいは教育活動を通じて具体的かつ体系的に分析した。 当時、朝鮮の改革と近代化は金玉均などの開化派を中心に進められたが、西欧的よりは日本的なものにより積極的になされた。この過程において、日本は武力による朝鮮進出を計画するのではなく、教育事業を通じて朝鮮に進出しようとした。結局、日本の対朝鮮教育事業は朝鮮を日本の影響力の下に置く手段となった。しかし、一方では朝鮮の近代化と朝鮮の自主的独立に目を向けさせるような、多大な影響を与えたということを明らかにした。

영문 초록

In this article, I analyse the modernisation of Chosun (which relates to the awareness of the Western European invasion of Asia) and the process of Japan’s invasion of Chosun, in connection with Japan’s educational projects for Chosun. In particular, I present a concrete and systematic account of Japan’s role in the reform and modernization of Chosun through the analysis of the educational projects and their implementations by Yukichi Fukuzawa and Yoshizaburo Okakura. At that time, the reforms and modernisation of Chosun were mainly led by progressive activists such as Ok-gyun Kim, with their approach resembling the Japanese approach, rather than the Western one. In this process, Japan did not resort to violence to invade Chosun but attempted to make use of educational projects. In the end, Japan’s education projects against Chosun served as a primary basis for putting Chosun under the influence of Japan. On the other hand, as argued in the present study, it had a great influence on the people of Chosun, letting them pay more attention to the modernisation of Chosun and its autonomous independence.
