국문 초록

본고는 『변태심리』의 특집호에 나타난 다이쇼기의 소년범죄를 분석하였다. ｢불량소년연구호｣에서는 불량소년이 되는 원인과 감화사업에 관한 내용이 주를 이루었다. 불량소년이 되는 원인은 개인적 원인과 사회적 원인이 있는데, 개인적 원인은 정신적 결함과 선천적 요인 및 유전에 의한 것을 원인으로 꼽았다. 이를 통해 『변태심리』가 소년범죄의 원인을 ‘정신의학’과 ‘심리학’, ‘우생학’과 같은 서구에서 유입된 근대 과학에 맞춰 설명하고, 근대화되던 일본 사회의 논의를 흡수하여 공론화하려는 선구적인 역할을 자처했음을 엿볼 수 있었다. 사회적인 원인으로는 다이쇼기 이전의 인습적인 행위부터 서구문물 유입으로 인한 사회적 변화로 인한 문제를 제기하였는데 이는 사회환경의 변화와 감화를 통해 소년들을 개량할 수 있다는 사고로 이어지면서 감화사업을 향한 관심으로 이어진다. 감화사업이란 소년들을 ‘징치’가 아닌 ‘감화(교육)’을 통해 개선하고 재범을 저지르지 않도록 조치해야 함을 뜻한다. 도메오카가 범죄를 미연에 방지하기 위해 소년들을 개량하는 감화교육 자체의 중요성을 피력하였다면 오가와는 범죄 이후 재범을 방지하기 위한 감화 시설의 확립이 선행되어야 한다고 주장한다. 가정학교를 설립하며 감화 교육시설 정립의 일선에서 활약한 도메오카와 당시 구 소년법의 성립에도 많은 영향을 미친 오가와의 기사를 적극적으로 실으면서 일본 사회에 감화사업에 대한 올바른 지식을 전달하고자 노력했음을 알 수 있다. 한편, ｢소년교양문제호｣에서는 첫째로는 소년범죄를 줄이고 소년들을 올바르게 교육하기 위한 방책으로서 서구의 사회 제도들을 소개하며 일본에도 사회복지 사업과 제도의 양성이 필요하다고 피력하는 기사를 다룬다. 둘째로는 학교 교육으로 불량소년을 다루는 방법을 얘기하는데, ‘멘탈 테스트’와 같은 입시시험과 아동의 심리, 아동의 개성에 주목하고 학교 교육 제도에서 벗어난 교육의 필요성을 주창한다. 이와 같은 기사들은 1920년대 다이쇼 자유교육운동에 영향을 받은 것으로 판단할 수 있는데, 자유교육운동과 불량소년을 연결하여 사고하는 점에서 기존의 교육 연구 관점과는 다른 관점을 찾을 수 있었다. 이상에서 살펴보듯 『변태심리』는 기존의 사회학에서 분석하였던 소년범죄의 현실적인 양상뿐만 아니라 그 이면에 존재하는 다양한 이론을 바탕으로 하는 논의를 함께 제시하였다는 점에 의미가 있다. 본고는 『변태심리』의 특집호를 통해 소년범죄를 신체와 유전의 문제로 다룬다거나 감화법과 구 소년법의 제도 성립을 전후로 하여 나타난 교육론에 관한 비판적 사고를 살펴보며, 다이쇼기 일본 사회에 유입되던 서구 담론과 소년범죄를 중심으로 근대의 탄생을 재조명하고 소년 문제를 둘러싼 당대의 논점과 사회학 연구에서는 미처 보지 못했던 이면까지 들여다볼 수 있었다는 점에 의의를 둔다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzed the juvenile crimes of the Taishō era that appeared in special issues of Hentai Shinri. In the “A Research of Delinquent Boys,” the main contents were about the causes of becoming a delinquent boy and the project of reformatories. The causes of becoming a delinquent boy include personal and social causes. Personal causes include mental defects, congenital factors, and genetics. It can tell that Hentai Shinri had a pioneering attempt to absorb discussions of modernizing Japanese society and to make them public through explaining the causes of juvenile crime in a way of modern science introduced from the West, such as ‘psychiatry’, ‘psychology’, and ‘eugenics.’ As social causes, the problem was raised from conventional behavior before the Taishō era to social changes caused by the influx of Western culture. These led to the idea that boys can be improved through edification leading to interest in the reformatories business. The reformatories business means that the boys should be improved through ‘Edification (education)’ rather than ‘Punishment’ and measures should be taken to prevent them from re-offending. While Tomeoka expressed the importance of reform education itself to improve boys in order to prevent crimes in advance, Ogawa argues that the establishment of reformatories facilities to prevent recidivism after a crime must come first. It can be seen that efforts were made to convey correct knowledge about the reformatories project to Japanese society by actively publishing articles by well-known scholars. Meanwhile, the “The Problem of Juvenile Refinement”, First, it introduced Western social welfare systems as a way to reduce juvenile crime and educate boys properly, and featured an article that expresses the need for social welfare projects and training in Japan as well. Second, there are articles dealing with school education and delinquent boys. These articles, can be understand as influenced by the Taisho New Education Movement of the 1920s, focused on entrance exams, children’s psychology, and children’s individuality, and advocate education outside of the school education system. This paper is meaningful in that, through a special issue of Hentai Shinri it presented not only the problems of delinquent boys in those days but also the discussions based on various theories that exist hidden side of the social studies.
