전후 일본의 한국전쟁과 상상의 (불)가능성

국문 초록

본고는 마쓰모토 세이초(松本清張, 1909~1992)의 ｢존엄(尊厳)｣(1955)과 ｢검은 바탕의 그림(黒地の絵)｣(1958)을 분석함으로써, 세이초에게 있어 ‘한국전쟁’이라는 사건이 어떤 의미인지를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 일본(인)에게 있어 ‘한국전쟁’은 ‘하이퍼리얼(HYPER-REAL)’이었다. 이는 한국전쟁이라는 재현 불가능한 원본을 일본(인)이 상상(력)을 통해 재현함으로써, 새로운 현실을 생산하려고 한 욕망을 의미한다. 세이초는 두 소설을 통해, 당대 한국전쟁을 둘러싼 ‘상상(력)’을 비틀고, 재구축하려 했다. ｢검은 바탕의 그림｣에서는 선행연구가 지적해 온 미군기지와 인종 문제, 가해자/피해자의 국가적 은유로 수렴되지 않는 인물과 공간이 나타난다. 우선 한국전쟁에서 전사한 미군의 시체를 처리하기 위해 만들어진 ‘시체처리반(A.G.R.S.)’과 그 공간에 주목할 필요가 있다. 그곳에서 인물들은 한국전쟁에서 전사한 무수한 시체들을 목도한다. 그들은 이성과 논리로만 이해해 왔던 ‘한국전쟁’이, 더 이상 논리로서는 설명될 수 없는 영역에 있음을 깨닫게 된다. 이를 통해 일본이 한국전쟁의 시체처리장으로서 전쟁에 관여하고 있었다는 작가의 인식을 엿볼 수 있다. 마지막으로 ｢검은 바탕의 그림｣보다 3년 전에 발표된 ｢존엄｣을 통해, 세이초에게 있어 한국전쟁에 대한 이미지의 ‘원형’을 발견할 수 있다. ｢존엄｣은 쇼와천황을 둘러싼 ‘천황행행 오도사건(天皇行幸誤導)’을 모티프로 한 소설로, 전후 천황(제)의 무책임을 비판하고자 한 의도를 엿볼 수 있다. ‘한국전쟁’을 통해 일본 사회의 최종심급이 ‘천황(제)’에서 ‘미국’으로 이행하고 있음을 포착한 세이초는, 태평양 전쟁의 기억과 한국전쟁을 겹쳐놓음으로써, 숭고한 희생의 이름 하에서 인간의 ‘존엄’을 박탈당한 존재들에 대한 기억과 애도를 요청한 것이다. 본고는 ｢존엄｣과 ｢검은 바탕의 그림｣에 대한 분석을 통해, 마쓰모토 세이초가 ‘한국전쟁’을 전후 일본의 중요한 전환점으로 포착했음을 밝혀냈다. 한국전쟁을 기점으로 일본은 경제·정치적 안정기로 진입하게 되지만, 이는 동시에 과거의 치부를 망각하는 계기가 되기도 했다. 세이초는 이러한 치부를 드러냄으로써, 전후 일본의 기억의 문제를 수면 위로 올리고, ‘전후’를 되묻는 해체적 작업을 수행했던 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes Seicho Matsumoto's (1909-1992) “Songen(Dignity)”(1955) and “Kuroji-no-E(Picture on a Black Canvas)”(1958) to understand the meaning of ‘Korean War’ for Seicho. For Japanese, the ‘Korean War’ was ‘HYPER-REAL.’ This refers to the desire of Japanese to produce a new reality by reproducing the unrepresentable original of the Korean War through their imagination. Seicho attempted to twist and reconstruct the ‘imagination’ surrounding the Korean War. In “Kuroji-no-E,” characters and spaces that do not converge into the national metaphors of U.S. military bases, racial issues, and perpetrators/victims appear. First of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the ‘A.G.R.S.’ and its space, which were created to dispose of the bodies of American soldiers killed in the Korean War. The characters witness countless corpses of those killed in the Korean War. They realize that the ‘Korean War’, which they had understood only through reason and logic, can no longer be explained by logic. We can get a glimpse of the author's perception that Japan was involved in the Korean War as a corpse disposal site. Lastly, through “Songen,” which was published three years before “Kuroji- no-E,” we can discover the ‘prototype’ of Seicho’s image of the Korean War. “Songen” is a novel based on the motif of the ‘incident that misdirected Emperor Showa’, and its intention to criticize the emperor in postwar Japan. Through the ‘Korean War’, Seicho captures that the ‘last instance’ of Japanese society is changing from ‘Emperor’ to ‘America.’ And by overlapping the memories of the Pacific War and the Korean War, he requested memory and mourning for those who were deprived of human ‘dignity’ in the name of noble sacrifice. Through the analysis of Songen” and “Kuroji-no-E,” this paper found that Seicho Matsumoto captured the ‘Korean War’ as an important turning point in post-war Japan. After the Korean War, Japan entered a period of economic and political stability, but this also served as an opportunity to forget the shameful past. By revealing this shameful past, Seicho raised the issue of post-war Japan's memory and performed deconstructive work to question the ‘post-war’.
