中島敦の植民地表象と文明病としての結核

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 나카지마 아쓰시가 겪은 폐병이 그의 작품에 어떻게 반영되고 있는지에 대해 ｢순경이 있는 풍경｣과 ｢빛과 바람과 꿈｣을 중심으로 검토해 왔다. 나카지마는 순경이 있는 풍경에서는 혹독한 기후, 냉혹한 자연과 함께 일본 식민지주의가 빚어낸 식민지 조선의 수도 경성의 현실을 창백한 얼굴로 죽어가는 폐병 환자의 이미지로 표상하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 『빛과 바람과 꿈』에서 천연낙토라는 남양의 이미지는 오리엔탈리즘에 의해 만들어진 허상에 불과하며, 사실 유럽 식민주의와 인간의 탐욕, 이기주의로 전쟁이나 착취와 대상이 된 공간으로 그려지고 있으며, 그러한 남양의 실상은 폐병의 전지요양 장소인 새너토리엄의 이미지로 표상되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이 두 작품을 이렇게 해석할 수 있다면, 이는 문명을 내세운 식민주의에 대한 비판으로 볼 수 있지 않을까 한다. 다만 위 작품에서 결핵은 단순한 식민주의의 표상보다는 더 넓은 의미로 보아야 할 것으로 보인다. 즉, ｢문자화｣ 등을 비롯한 중국물에 있어서의 문명비판이라는 나카지마의 작가정신도 고려하면, 보다 넓은 의미에서 제국주의를 포함한 언어나 문자, 이성, 합리주의 등 문명 보편의 모순을 표상하고 있는 것으로 읽을 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

In this paper, we have examined how the lung disease that Atsushi Nakajima experienced is reflected in his works, focusing on ‘Scenery with the police officer’ and ‘Light, Wind and Dreams’. In ‘Scenery with the police officer’, Nakajima appears to represent the reality of Gyeongseong, the capital of colonial Korea, created by Japanese colonialism, along with the harsh climate and harsh nature, through the image of a patient with a lung disease dying with a pale face. In ‘Light, Wind and Dreams’, the image of Samoa Island, known as a utopia created by nature, is nothing more than an illusion created by Orientalism, and is in fact depicted as a space subject to war and exploitation due to European colonialism, human greed, and egoism. It turns out that the reality of Samoa Island is represented by the image of a sanatorium, a place for nursing lung diseases. If these two works can be interpreted this way, I think they can be seen as a criticism of colonialism in the name of civilization. However, it seems that tuberculosis in the above work should be viewed in a broader meaning than a simple symbol of colonialism. In other words, considering Nakajima's criticism of civilization in Chinese works, it can be read in a broader sense as representing the contradictions of universal civilization, such as language, characters, reason, and rationalism, including imperialism.
