영화 〈아이 캔 스피크〉의 서사전략과 언어의 역할

국문 초록

영화 〈아이 캔 스피크〉의 소재는 2007년 06월 미국하원 연방의회 청문회에서 직접 증언하고 ‘위안부’ 사죄 결의안(HR121)을 이끌어낸 ‘일본군 위안부 피해자’이다. 영화는 시장상가를 중심으로 한 명도소송과 주인공 나옥분의 영어 습득 과정을 유쾌하게 보여주면서 짐짓 딴청을 부리다가 상영 시간의 절반을 훨씬 넘긴 75분 정도가 지나서야 일본군 ‘위안부’ 피해자 문제를 드러낸다. 청문회에서 증언을 하기로 한 옥분의 친구 정심이 치매로 인해 증언을 할 수 없는 상황이 발생하면서 옥분이 증언을 결심하게 되면서이다. 이 지점에서 서사는 일상의 유쾌함에서 진중한 역사적 쟁점으로 이동하는데, 서사를 극적으로 이동시키고 있는 핵심요소는 언어이다. 이 연구는 1) 〈아이 캔 스피크〉의 서사 구조의 분석을 통해 픽션에서 팩트를 다루는 서사전략을 탐색하고, 2) 영화에 사용된 언어의 의미와 기능을 살펴보며, 3) 언어 습득이 개인을 어떻게 변화시키고 나아가 역사와 사회에 어떤 영향을 줄 수 있는가를 고찰해 보는 데 목적이 있다. 이런 연구는 기억과 증언이 무엇인가를 생각하게 하고, 역사적 사건 속의 피해자의 인격과 인권에 대해 사회구성원에게 숙고할 기회를 제공하며, 진정한 공존 방식에 대한 해결방안을 모색해 보게 한다. 한편 픽션에서 어떤 전략으로 팩트를 드러낼 것인지를 고찰해 봄으로써 다양한 스토리텔링 방식을 끌어내는 데도 도움이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

The subject of the Korean film, “I Can Speak(2017)”is the victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery who came forward in person at the hearing of the United States House committee in June, 2007 and led the United States House of Representatives House Resolution 121(HR121). The story starts with the eviction suit against the Korean traditional market and the English learning process of the main character, Na Ok-bun(나옥분) in humorous ways. It is not until the first 75 minutes that the issue on the victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery is shown to us. It's way past the half of the running time. Na Ok-bun determines to testify at the hearing on behalf of her friend, Jeong-sim(정심), who was supposed to step forward but now suffers from dementia. At this point, the narrative moves from the pleasures of daily life to the serious issue of history. Language is the core tool that moves the narrative dramatically. The purpose of this paper is to study 1) a narrative strategy that deals with facts in fiction by analysing the narrative structure in the film, “I Can Speak”, 2) the meaning and role used in the film, and 3) how the acquisition of language can change an individual and go on to affect history and the whole society. This study will give society members opportunity to think over memory and testimony, the victim's personality and human rights in the historical issue, and a solution to the problem of actual coexistence. Furthermore, it will be helpful to the storytelling method by considering how to reveal the facts in fiction.
